God changes Jacob’s name to Israel after spending a whole night wrestling with him. This is such a good a reminder to rest in the truth that God is the one that determines our identity. In the following chapters we see a beautiful picture of reconciliation through Jacob and Esau’s restored relationship. We are also reminded of man’s depravity in the story of Dinah, but as we have discussed before, we continue to see God’s plan at work despite their sin. We would love for you to listen in and we pray that this conversation is encouraging to you as you pursue a deeper understanding of God’s Word.
“Just like the tone of this passage changes when Jacob focuses on who God is, the tone of our lives will change when we do this as well.”
“When God makes us wrestle him for some blessing(s), it is not because God is reluctant to bless us, even if that’s how it first feels. It is because he has more blessings for us in the wrestling than without it.” -John Piper
“Our identity is not in what we do, but whose we are.”
“There is a true and better Jacob who wrestled and took the blow of justice that we deserve so we, like Jacob only receive the wounds of grace that wake us up and discipline us” -Tim Keller
“Chapter 35 shows us that passing of one generation to another. Transformed by the experiences at Bethel and Penial, Jacob is now in a position to assume the mantle of his father as the one through whom the divine promises to Abraham will be continued” -ESV Study Bible
