00:00:00 Speaker 1: For where your treasure is there, your heart will be also Matthew six twenty one. Heavenly Father, we come to you with open hearts, seeking to align our values with what truly matters in your eyes. In a world that often measures worth by material wealth and success, remind us that the truest treasure lies in our relationship with you and in the love we share with others. Help us to invest in the eternal, not the temporal. Guide our efforts and desires into building up treasures that do not fade. Love, kindness, justice, and peace. Teach us to find joy in simplicity and satisfaction in the spiritual riches you provide. Encourage us to see our time, our talents, and our resources as gifts that you have entrusted to us. We want to use all these things for your glory instead of hoarding them for our own benefit. May our lives reflect a heart that treasures your word, your love, and your Kingdom above all else. As we navigate the distractions and temptations of this life, keep us focused on what is everlasting, draw our hearts even closer to you, transforming us into beacons of your light and love in a needy world. Jesus words held weight. People felt a heaviness in their hearts as he spoke. He spoke of heaven as if it was already present among them. As he spoke about what it meant to live in the light of the Kingdom, they felt like it was here and now and they could be active citizens to bring about positive change. 00:02:57 Speaker 2: Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is there, your heart will also be. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your vision is set properly, the rest of you won't stumble. But if your eyes are turned away or your vision is tarnished, then you'll live in darkness. 00:03:26 Speaker 1: Jesus voice cracked as he considered his next words. He thought about all the people who had lost their souls to greed and the love of money. It was a cruel master, promising life but dragging people's souls into death. 00:03:45 Speaker 2: Hear me, friends, no one can serve two masters. You will hate the one and love the other. You be devoted to one. 00:03:54 Speaker 3: And despise the other. 00:03:55 Speaker 2: You can't serve God and money. 00:04:02 Speaker 4: Are you in pain after walking, running, or even just standing. Today we delve into a significant teaching from Jesus's Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew chapter six, verses nineteen through twenty four. This passage addresses the importance of storing up treasures in heaven rather than on earth, and warns against the dangers of materialism and divided loyalties. We will connect this teaching to the story of acan sin in Joshua chapter seven, emphasizing how prioritizing personal riches over a greater, long lasting purpose leads to devastating consequences. Together, we'll learn to align our hearts with God's eternal purposes. 00:06:15 Speaker 1: The faithful arm of God carried Israel to victory. The Israelite army laughed and cheered in the streets of Jericho. 00:06:23 Speaker 3: What did I tell you. 00:06:26 Speaker 1: Joshua shouted, his face aglow and euphoric, his jaw quivered with gratitude to God. 00:06:34 Speaker 3: God has given us the victory. He has done this. He told you to be strong and courageous, and look what has happened. This is what's possible when you trust the mighty hand of the Lord. 00:06:46 Speaker 1: The dust settled over the rubble of Jericho. Those in the city who were spared were given sufficient supplies. The day was drawing to a close, and the men were gathering the spoils of war, taking anything valuable to store for the rest of Israel. 00:07:04 Speaker 3: Ignore the idols and shrines, Cast aside anything that would cause your heart to stumble. Remember that the Lord has won this for us. Don't taint our victory with greed. 00:07:15 Speaker 1: The men did as they were told, casting graven statues of foreign gods into the fire. They kept precious jewels, gold and silver for themselves. They would need it to feed their families for the journey ahead. Joshua looked up and breathed a sigh of relief. 00:07:35 Speaker 3: Ah, thank you. 00:07:39 Speaker 1: Since the death of Moses, Joshua wonder if he was fit for the role of leader. He certainly wasn't Moses. He was his own man, but still called by God for great things. Joshua turned to an abandoned temple had gold laced around its pillars and bronze statues guarded the entrance. He turned to one of the men and gestured for him to follow. 00:08:09 Speaker 3: A Ken over here, let's see what's in here. 00:08:12 Speaker 1: Akein briskly walked beside Joshua. Aikin was a shifty fellow, but a skilled warrior when he listened. Together, they entered the temple. It reeked of rotten sacrifices and stale incense. Spoiled wine leaped from the coffers. In the center of the temple was an altar. On it sat some gold engraved idols and piles of gold coins. Joshua winced with disgust. 00:08:45 Speaker 3: Ah, let's burn this place. There's nothing valuable here. 00:08:49 Speaker 1: Joshua turned and began walking out, but Aikin was still, eyes fixed on the altar. His brows were raised to the top of his head, and his heart beat heavily in his chest. It was as if the idols were calling to him. Whispers of greed crept into his heart as he slowly reached for the idols. 00:09:17 Speaker 3: Aken, are you coming? 00:09:18 Speaker 1: Joshua's words interrupted his trance. Aichon shook his head. 00:09:23 Speaker 5: And smiled, Oh, yes, of course I'm coming. 00:09:28 Speaker 1: Acon joined Joshua's side and walked with him out of the temple. 00:09:32 Speaker 3: Come back here with a torch and burn the place. All the gold here has been tainted with idolatry. We can't have these things corrupting the people. Right away, sir, as the Lord commands. 00:09:44 Speaker 1: Aikin returned with a torch in his hand. Later that night, the flames caused shadows to drift over the altar like a serpent. A greedy smile curved upward on Aikin's face. Looked around to see if anyone was watching. 00:10:02 Speaker 2: Ah, what harm could it do? 00:10:04 Speaker 6: Nobody has to know. 00:10:06 Speaker 1: His whispers bounced off the empty walls. He took the gold and stuffed it in his bag. He poured oil on the altar and lit it on the fire. The temple was reduced to ashes, but its wickedness was carried out by Achin back to the Israelite camp. 00:10:30 Speaker 3: Victory over Jericho has won us another week, but there is still much to be done before we can enter the land, the Lord promised us. 00:10:37 Speaker 1: Joshua paced back and forth on a large platform, speaking to his men as their commander. 00:10:43 Speaker 3: Our next objective is Ai. Our spies have returned with an excellent report. Gentlemen. 00:10:50 Speaker 5: Listen up, men, we've surveyed the Kingdom of Ai. It seems as though they depended too heavily on Jericho for protection. Now did the walls have crumbled and Rago has fallen. It's vulnerable. We should only need two thousand men to march. The rest can protect the camp and. 00:11:07 Speaker 3: Be on call for reinforcements. Prepare your swords and your hearts. We march. 00:11:13 Speaker 1: At done, the men prepared themselves. Acon was among them, itching to see what other treasures awaited on the other side of the walls. They traveled to the borders of Ai, where the vulnerable Canaanite army stood in defense. Their spears were raised. Trembling with fearful hands. Joshua cod sense this would be an easy battle. 00:11:40 Speaker 7: Charge. 00:11:42 Speaker 1: The men's marching turn to sprinting. They shouted and stormed the gates. Ai met them with unexpected strength. The battle raged, and the people of Israel began to waver. Canaanite's swords tore apart the flesh of the thirty six Israelite men, and it became apparent to Joshua that they wouldn't win. Something unseen was happening in the margin ritreat. The army of Israel fled to the mountains. The men of Ai cheered and mocked them as they left, like dogs with tails tucked between their legs. Dirty, bloody, and bruised. The men sat on stones, astonished. Joshua retreated in anger. Flustered and confused, he bowed to the Lord. 00:12:39 Speaker 3: How could this have happened? Why would you give us victory against the lions of Jericho and then let us fall at the hands of mice in Ai. It doesn't make sense. 00:12:49 Speaker 1: Joshua tightened his jaw. His eyes were sealed shut, holding back tears. 00:12:56 Speaker 6: Why did you bring us over the Jordan at Hall? Would you bring us out here to have us slaughtered? We've fled from our enemies. Word will spread of our cowardice, and they will be emboldened to come out. 00:13:06 Speaker 3: And slaughter us. 00:13:08 Speaker 1: Joshua finally began to cry. His heart was broken over such a tragic loss. Although thirty six men was not a large military blow, it meant everything to Israel. Each man was precious. Joshua felt his chest tighten. God was in his midst A chill blew through the trees. Joshua began to shake. He looked up and heard God's voice speaking to him and through him. 00:13:44 Speaker 7: Get up. 00:13:45 Speaker 1: Joshua sprung to his feet and looked around. The Lord's anger was white hot in contrast to the frosted night. 00:13:53 Speaker 7: Why do you fall on your face? The people have broken their promises to me. They have stolen idols. If I am not their God, why would I grant them victory? 00:14:07 Speaker 3: What do you mean? 00:14:08 Speaker 7: They have taken objects devoted to destruction and idolatry. They have stolen what I set apart for destruction. They harbor idols in their tents and hearts. The people of Israel will not stand before their enemies. They've devoted themselves to destruction, so destruction is what they shall receive. I will be with you no more. My blessing will be removed from your swords and your shields until those idols are destroyed. 00:14:47 Speaker 3: Lord, I had no idea. Please have mercy. 00:14:51 Speaker 7: We can enough groveling, Get up, concentrate the people. Tell them that the God of Israel shall search them out in the morning. They shall be brought before me as tribes. Lot will be cast to reveal the perpetrator, and he who has taken the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done an outrageous thing in Israel. 00:15:36 Speaker 1: Joshua nodded like a good soldier. 00:15:38 Speaker 3: Yes, Yes, Lord. 00:15:40 Speaker 1: He marched off, prepared to gather the people for a reckoning. Joshua rose early and brought out every tribe of Israel before him. He paced in front of them, staring. 00:15:54 Speaker 3: Our defeat against Ai was unexpected. We were able to conquer jerik Oh because we serve a God mightier than any fortress or army. When we serve the Lord, anything is possible. But hear me, you cannot serve two masters. 00:16:13 Speaker 1: Joshua's gaze match the intensity of God. 00:16:17 Speaker 3: One of you has hoarded idols in your tent. We will cast lots to see who has sinned. 00:16:24 Speaker 1: Aikin's eyes widened and his throat clenched. 00:16:27 Speaker 2: Perhaps the lot will all elsewhere. 00:16:29 Speaker 1: The lots were cast. 00:16:31 Speaker 3: Joshua shouted, Judah, your tribe will step forward. 00:16:35 Speaker 1: Achin God. All from the tribe of Judah were brought before Joshua. One by one. They brought their case before Joshua and left. Then Achin came forward. Aikin's eyes revealed his sins. He didn't need to say anything. Joshua saw the guilt painted all over his face. 00:17:03 Speaker 3: He can what have you done? 00:17:06 Speaker 2: I've sinned against the Lord. 00:17:09 Speaker 5: I took some of the gold and silver I thought I could. 00:17:13 Speaker 3: I mean, I didn't see it. Harmon, it's only money. No, you're wrong, It's never only money, Achan. They aren't just objects. They're symbols of your allegiance. Search his tent. 00:17:30 Speaker 1: Achin's tent was ransacked. They brought all the gold and silver Aichin had taken and showcased it to all the people. They bound Achan in the middle of the valley. Each tribe member picked up stones, tears of rage and sorrow dripping from their chins. One by one they hurled stones at him. Blood and screams scattered across the field. Akin writhed before them, bound and not able to free himself. Stone after stone struck Achin until he breathed his last. Joshua took Achin along with his idols and burned them. Every One looked as Akin melted with his idols. He shared their fate, destined to become nothing. The anger of God disappeared with the ashes of Acin and his idols. 00:18:36 Speaker 7: Joshua, do not be afraid to go against Ai. I have given them into your house. 00:18:45 Speaker 1: Joshua felt the confidence of the Lord return. This time, Joshua gathered thirty thousand of his finest men to take the city. 00:18:58 Speaker 3: Do not store up for your self treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is there, your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness. How great is that darkness. No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you'll be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Jesus teaches us to focus on eternal treasures rather than temporary, earthly possessions. He warns against the dangers of materialism and divided loyalties, emphasizing that we cannot serve both God and money. Our hearts follow our treasures, so we must ensure that our treasures are aligned with God's eternal purposes. The story of Akan provides a powerful example of the consequences of prioritizing personal riches over a greater purpose. After the miraculous victory at Jericho, God commanded the Israelites to devote all the spoils of the city to him and to avoid taking any of the forbidden items for themselves. However, Akan chose to disobey this command. In Joshua chapter seven, we read about Aikan's actions and their consequences. Aikan's decision to prioritize personal riches over God's command led to a devastating defeat for Israel. And severe consequences for himself and for his family. His actions demonstrated a divided loyalty, where his heart was set on earthly treasures rather than God's greater purpose. Let's explore some of those dangers and what greed will do to our hearts. First, the temporary verses the eternal. Acan's choice to take the forbidden items represented a focus on temporary, earthly riches rather than eternal heavenly treasures. Jesus warns us that earthly treasures are subject to decay and theft, whereas heavenly treasures are eternal and secure. Acn chose momentary riches over the greater victory of Israel. He forsook his legacy and the ability to march on and experience the Promised Land. There's also divided loyalty. Acan's actions revealed a divided heart. Jesus teaches that we cannot serve both God and money. Our loyalties will ultimately be revealed by our choices. ACN's divided loyalty led to his downfall. People often wonder about their destiny and God's plan for their lives when momentary pleasure and greed are consistently chosen it blurs the path ahead. And let's not forget the consequences of sin. They can sin had far reaching consequences, affecting not only himself, but also the entire community of Israel. When we prioritize personal gain over obedience to God, we risk bringing harm to ourselves and those around us. Let's seek to align ourselves with God's purposes. How well, here's some steps we see according to scripture. First, examine your priorities Regularly examine your heart to ensure that your priorities align with God's eternal purposes. Ask yourself if you're seeking temporary riches or eternal treasures. The more we're considering the inward workings of our hearts and questioning our intentions, the more equipped we will be at spotting greed and corruption. Second, practice generosity. Cultivate a spirit of generosity, giving to others without expecting anything in return. This reflects a heart devoted to God and his kingdom. Third, stay accountable. Surround yourself with the community of believers who can hold you accountable and encourage you to stay focused on God's purposes. People who can't be questioned do questionable things? Have you made too many provisions in your life to get away with sin. As we reflect on Jesus' words in Matthew Chapter six, Verses nineteen through twenty four and the story of acan Sin, let us be reminded of the importance of prioritizing eternal treasures over temporary riches. May we strive to serve God with undivided loyalty, seeking his kingdom above all else. Let us trust in his provision and align our hearts with his eternal purposes. Let us pray for the grace and wisdom to be true citizens of Heaven, living out the devotion and integrity that Jesus calls us to. Thanks again for listening to the Jesus Podcast.
