In all his shortcomings, victories, sins, and gifts, he paled in comparison to the greatness of Jesus. Yet the beauty of the gospel is that we all share in Jesus’s victory, even after we deny him.
Today's Bible verse is Romans 1:16, from the King James Version.

Speaker 1: Let us pray for I am not ashamed of the
00:00:04
Speaker 1: good News of Christ, because it is the power of
00:00:07
Speaker 1: God for salvation for everyone who believes. For the jew first,
00:00:12
Speaker 1: and also the Greek Romans one sixteen. Dear Heavenly Father,
00:00:18
Speaker 1: we acknowledge that we are not ashamed of the Gospel,
00:00:21
Speaker 1: for it is the power of God for salvation. We
00:00:25
Speaker 1: thank you for the gift of the Gospel, the good
00:00:28
Speaker 1: News of salvation through your Son. We pray that we
00:00:31
Speaker 1: may never feel shame or fear in sharing this powerful
00:00:35
Speaker 1: message of love, grace, and retemption. We ask for the
00:00:40
Speaker 1: courage and boldness to proclaim the gospel openly, and for
00:00:45
Speaker 1: the wisdom to share it effectively. We ask that you
00:00:49
Speaker 1: embolden our hearts and strengthen our resolves so that we
00:00:52
Speaker 1: may be unyielding witnesses of your love in a world
00:00:57
Speaker 1: that desperately needs it. In the powerful name of Jesus,
00:01:02
Speaker 1: we pray, Amen, Thank you for praying with me today.
00:01:09
Speaker 1: Stay tuned now for another episode of Stories of the
00:01:12
Speaker 1: Messiah with Rabbi Schneider.
00:01:20
Speaker 2: The cold bites of night sank into Peter's bones. He
00:01:24
Speaker 2: shook in place, both from the chilly air and from nerves.
00:01:28
Speaker 2: Jesus had just been taken to be beaten and tried
00:01:31
Speaker 2: Fearful that he might also be taken away, Peter kept
00:01:34
Speaker 2: a low profile. He kept his head down and warmed
00:01:37
Speaker 2: himself by the fire and the temple courtyard. He wanted
00:01:41
Speaker 2: to see Jesus, but didn't want to be noticed. The
00:01:44
Speaker 2: fire was lit using dark charcoal.
00:01:46
Speaker 3: The smell was pungent and ashy. A group gathered around
00:01:49
Speaker 3: the fire.
00:01:50
Speaker 2: All of them were curious about what was going to
00:01:52
Speaker 2: happen to Jesus. As they spoke, a servant girl saw
00:01:56
Speaker 2: Peter's face illuminated by the light.
00:01:58
Speaker 3: She pointed to him said, hey, this man was with Jesus.
00:02:03
Speaker 3: Peter snarled and shook his head.
00:02:05
Speaker 2: I don't know that man, he responded silently. A man
00:02:09
Speaker 2: peered at him closely and said, oh, I recognize you.
00:02:13
Speaker 2: You are one of his disciples, aren't you. Peter's eyes
00:02:17
Speaker 2: darted at the man.
00:02:18
Speaker 3: I am not.
00:02:19
Speaker 2: I have no idea what you're talking about. Everyone left
00:02:23
Speaker 2: it alone and continued to warm themselves by the fire.
00:02:26
Speaker 2: The smell of charcoal filled the air, burning hotter by
00:02:29
Speaker 2: the minute. Yet Peter still shook. He thought about Jesus
00:02:33
Speaker 2: and wondered if he would be condemned to die. One
00:02:36
Speaker 2: of the men tilted his head to the side and observed, Peter, certainly,
00:02:39
Speaker 2: you are one of his followers. You're a Galilean just
00:02:42
Speaker 2: like the others.
00:02:44
Speaker 3: This time Peter snapped.
00:02:45
Speaker 2: Fear, guilt and anxiousness overtook him, and he yelled, I have.
00:02:49
Speaker 4: No idea what any of you.
00:02:51
Speaker 3: Are talking about.
00:02:52
Speaker 2: As he cursed them, Peter heard the crow of the rooster.
00:02:55
Speaker 2: He had denied Jesus three times before. The rooster crowed
00:02:59
Speaker 2: just as Master predicted. Peter was ashamed and turned around.
00:03:04
Speaker 2: When he did, he saw Jesus bound and being removed
00:03:08
Speaker 2: from the temple.
00:03:09
Speaker 5: Two of them locked eyes, and Peter felt.
00:03:11
Speaker 3: The total weight of his shame.
00:03:14
Speaker 2: Peter was frozen when he looked into the eyes of
00:03:16
Speaker 2: his master. Tears streamed down Peter's face, and he ran
00:03:20
Speaker 2: away in disgrace. He turned the corner, pressed his back
00:03:24
Speaker 2: against the coldstone wall, and wept bitterly.
00:03:28
Speaker 4: Hello and welcome to our final episode of the Jesus Podcast.
00:03:34
Speaker 4: I'm Ethan frompray dot com. This series is coming to
00:03:37
Speaker 4: a close, and I earnestly pray that each episode has
00:03:41
Speaker 4: abundantly blessed you. If you followed along this far, it
00:03:46
Speaker 4: means you probably have been impacted somehow by these fantastic stories.
00:03:52
Speaker 4: Consider sharing this series with a friend so they can
00:03:55
Speaker 4: also be affected by the gospel message. During our time together,
00:03:59
Speaker 4: we learned that Jesus is the greater Adam, the greater Cain, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Isaac, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Samson, Boaz, David, Solomon, Elijah, Jonah,
00:04:12
Speaker 4: and Daniel. Their stories are tales of tragedy, triumph, faith,
00:04:20
Speaker 4: and failure. The highs and lows of their lives give
00:04:24
Speaker 4: us hope that God can still use imperfect people like
00:04:27
Speaker 4: us to do great things. Their stories also point us
00:04:34
Speaker 4: to a greater hero, someone braver than David, stronger than Samson,
00:04:38
Speaker 4: and more faithful than Abraham. Jesus. Jesus is greater than
00:04:44
Speaker 4: all these heroes. We end this series with a deep
00:04:47
Speaker 4: dive into the highs and lows of Peter. He denied
00:04:52
Speaker 4: Jesus three times and descended a spiral of shame and guilt.
00:04:57
Speaker 4: Through Peter's story, we get a glimpse into our own
00:05:00
Speaker 4: journeys with Jesus. Like Peter, we can get caught up
00:05:03
Speaker 4: in cycles of shame that keep us from fulfilling our purpose.
00:05:08
Speaker 4: Let's see how Peter responds when we meet the resurrected Jesus.
00:05:12
Speaker 4: In this cinematic retelling of John chapter twenty one.
00:05:17
Speaker 2: Peter stared at the open sea, bobbing up and down
00:05:20
Speaker 2: on his boat.
00:05:21
Speaker 3: The shame of denying Jesus still weighed heavily on his shoulders.
00:05:25
Speaker 2: On top of that, he hadn't caught anything at all
00:05:27
Speaker 2: that night. The day was breaking over the water, and
00:05:30
Speaker 2: Peter had nothing to show for his efforts. He was
00:05:33
Speaker 2: a failure of a fisherman and a failure as a follower.
00:05:36
Speaker 2: He placed his face in his hands and sighed. Jesus
00:05:39
Speaker 2: had since revealed himself to the disciples, but Peter didn't
00:05:43
Speaker 2: dare speak to him. How could he face Jesus after
00:05:46
Speaker 2: what he had done. A few of the disciples were
00:05:48
Speaker 2: in the boat with him, just about to bring the
00:05:50
Speaker 2: nets back to the boat. Just then they had a
00:05:53
Speaker 2: voice called out from the shore. They saw a silhouetted
00:05:56
Speaker 2: figure shouting.
00:05:57
Speaker 3: Children, Did you catch any fish? Peter rolled his eyes.
00:06:01
Speaker 2: Probably another beggar eager for some extra fish.
00:06:04
Speaker 3: Now, Peter replied, without looking leave.
00:06:07
Speaker 2: Us alone, try casting your net on the right side
00:06:10
Speaker 2: of the boat, you might find a few fish swimming around.
00:06:13
Speaker 2: Peter grunted and waved the man off, but Nathaniel thought
00:06:16
Speaker 2: it might be worth a try before rowing back to shore.
00:06:19
Speaker 3: After all, what did they have to lose.
00:06:21
Speaker 2: Some of the disciples cast the net on to the
00:06:23
Speaker 2: other side, and immediately the nets began to stretch and
00:06:26
Speaker 2: pull at the boat.
00:06:27
Speaker 3: Peter stumbled forward and gripped the nets.
00:06:30
Speaker 6: They drew with all their might, but were unable to
00:06:33
Speaker 6: haul it in. There were just too many fish. Peter's
00:06:36
Speaker 6: heart began to race. He looked back at the shore
00:06:38
Speaker 6: and peered out. The sun was blocking the stranger from view.
00:06:42
Speaker 6: John leaned over the boat and smiled.
00:06:45
Speaker 5: He pointed and shouted, it's the Lord, It's Jesus.
00:06:49
Speaker 2: Peter took a step back and felt the pangs of
00:06:51
Speaker 2: shame come swelling back. Would the Lord ever accept him again?
00:06:55
Speaker 2: Was he worthy of Jesus's love? Peter pound at the
00:06:58
Speaker 2: side of the boat, and through a deep breath, he
00:07:01
Speaker 2: thought about where he was when Christ first called him.
00:07:04
Speaker 2: He was in a vessel filled with fish, calloused and
00:07:07
Speaker 2: a shade.
00:07:08
Speaker 3: But Jesus accepted him. He called him and gave him purpose.
00:07:12
Speaker 3: Maybe he would do that again. Peter stopped thinking and
00:07:15
Speaker 3: started moving.
00:07:17
Speaker 2: He put on his coat and left off the bow.
00:07:19
Speaker 2: Peter dove into the water and swam violently.
00:07:22
Speaker 3: He needed to be by Jesus.
00:07:28
Speaker 4: After Peter denied Jesus, he was weighed down with shame.
00:07:32
Speaker 4: The guilty felt was overwhelming and in many ways paralyzing.
00:07:37
Speaker 4: So Peter did what many of us do when we
00:07:39
Speaker 4: feel like we've failed. He went back to what was comfortable.
00:07:44
Speaker 4: Anytime we fail, or we feel like we've slipped in
00:07:47
Speaker 4: our faith, it can spiral out of control. We returned
00:07:51
Speaker 4: to whatever habits, lifestyles, or sins most comforted us. In
00:07:56
Speaker 4: many ways, we feel unworthy of the identity Jesus gave
00:08:00
Speaker 4: to us. Peter returned to the simple life of fishing,
00:08:04
Speaker 4: trying to drown out the feelings of regret, because he
00:08:06
Speaker 4: didn't feel worthy of being called a disciple. We've all
00:08:10
Speaker 4: denied Jesus in some way. With every sin or act
00:08:15
Speaker 4: of disobedience, we distance ourselves further from God. Whenever we
00:08:20
Speaker 4: transgress against someone, it's easy to flee and stay away
00:08:23
Speaker 4: from them. Guilt can keep us from drawing close to
00:08:27
Speaker 4: them and reconciling. The same can be said for our
00:08:31
Speaker 4: relationship with God. When we sin against him, sometimes we
00:08:35
Speaker 4: might feel too ashamed to approach him again. When this happens,
00:08:40
Speaker 4: we lose the intimacy with him that keeps us from
00:08:42
Speaker 4: sinning in the first place. So we end up devolving
00:08:46
Speaker 4: into a cycle of sin and grow further and further
00:08:49
Speaker 4: apart from the Lord. When Peter saw Jesus on the shore,
00:08:54
Speaker 4: he had a choice. He could continue to shy away
00:08:57
Speaker 4: from the hard conversations and the restorative process, or dive
00:09:02
Speaker 4: head first into the water and repent. Peter chose to jump.
00:09:07
Speaker 4: May we all be so bold when face was shame?
00:09:11
Speaker 4: Jesus invites us to enter a restorative process with him,
00:09:14
Speaker 4: But we have to be willing to jump, just like
00:09:17
Speaker 4: Peter did. How will Jesus treat Peter when he sees him?
00:09:21
Speaker 4: How will Peter be freed from this cycle of shame?
00:09:24
Speaker 4: Let's find out now. Let's find out now.
00:09:32
Speaker 2: Peter finally made it to shore, his clothes sopping, wet
00:09:35
Speaker 2: and cold. Jesus was tending to a small fire. The
00:09:39
Speaker 2: disciples brought some fish and sat down with Jesus to eat.
00:09:42
Speaker 2: Peter did not eat the fire was lit using dark charcoal.
00:09:46
Speaker 2: The smell was pungent and ashy. Peter was immediately brought
00:09:50
Speaker 2: back to that moment in the temple courtyard when he
00:09:52
Speaker 2: denied Jesus. He looked over the fire at Jesus.
00:09:56
Speaker 3: The two of them locked eyes, and.
00:09:57
Speaker 2: Peter felt the total weight of his shame. Jesus cut
00:10:01
Speaker 2: the silence and spoke to Peter, using his name.
00:10:04
Speaker 3: Given at birth, Simon, son of John. He said gently,
00:10:08
Speaker 3: do you love me?
00:10:09
Speaker 2: Peter's eyes revealed regret and sorrow.
00:10:11
Speaker 3: He nodded, saying yes, Lord, you know that I love you.
00:10:16
Speaker 5: Then feed my lambs, Jesus replied.
00:10:19
Speaker 2: He leaned over the log he was sitting on and
00:10:21
Speaker 2: looked deeper into Peter's eyes.
00:10:23
Speaker 5: He asked again, Simon, Peter, do you love me?
00:10:27
Speaker 2: Peter felt a lump in his throat. His eyes glistened
00:10:30
Speaker 2: with the sheen of repressed tears.
00:10:32
Speaker 3: Yes, Lord, he said, with a broken voice. You know
00:10:36
Speaker 3: that I love you. Jesus smiled and replied.
00:10:39
Speaker 1: Then ten to my sheep.
00:10:41
Speaker 2: Jesus stood up and walked over to Peter.
00:10:44
Speaker 3: He sat beside him. A third time.
00:10:46
Speaker 5: He asked, Simon son of Chhn, do you love me?
00:10:51
Speaker 2: Peter finally understood what Jesus was doing.
00:10:55
Speaker 3: Peter had denied.
00:10:56
Speaker 2: Jesus three times, and three times Jesus asked if he
00:11:01
Speaker 2: Peter finally released the damn of emotions and sobbed.
00:11:04
Speaker 3: Yes, Lord, you know all things.
00:11:07
Speaker 2: You know that I love you. Jesus put his arm
00:11:10
Speaker 2: around Peter. The disciple melted in Jesus's arms, releasing all
00:11:15
Speaker 2: the guilt and shame. Jesus put his arm around Peter.
00:11:19
Speaker 2: Jesus's strong, yet gentle voice encouraged.
00:11:22
Speaker 5: Peter, feed my sheep. Peter, truly I see to you.
00:11:28
Speaker 3: When you were young, you would dress yourself and walk
00:11:30
Speaker 3: wherever you want. But when you are old, you will
00:11:33
Speaker 3: stretch out your hands and another will carry you where
00:11:36
Speaker 3: you don't want to go.
00:11:37
Speaker 2: Jesus said this concerning Peter's crucifixion. He would be dragged, beaten,
00:11:42
Speaker 2: and crucified upside down for the sake of Christ. Peter
00:11:45
Speaker 2: would never deny Jesus again. He would lead the early
00:11:48
Speaker 2: Church with passion, wisdom, and strength. Peter would lead the
00:11:53
Speaker 2: charge against the gates of Hell, pressing forward for the
00:11:56
Speaker 2: name of Jesus. The Savior gave Peter one final calling
00:12:00
Speaker 2: the same colding he gave Peter in the beginning.
00:12:05
Speaker 4: Sopping wet, shivering and unashamed, Peter experienced the warmth of
00:12:09
Speaker 4: Christ's forgiveness. There was a special significance to the fire
00:12:14
Speaker 4: Jesus used to cook the fish. The charcoal used in
00:12:18
Speaker 4: the fire that day was the same in the temple courtyard.
00:12:22
Speaker 4: As Peter smelled the aroma, memories of his sins came
00:12:25
Speaker 4: rushing back. This was purposeful because there can be no
00:12:29
Speaker 4: restoration from our sins if we can't honestly face them.
00:12:34
Speaker 4: Jesus doesn't want us to forget about her. Jesus doesn't
00:12:37
Speaker 4: want us to forget about our mistakes or ignore them.
00:12:40
Speaker 4: He wants us to face them, to acknowledge them, and
00:12:44
Speaker 4: to heal us from them. When face was shame. Many
00:12:49
Speaker 4: of us want to forget and move on from our sins,
00:12:52
Speaker 4: but that robs us of a chance to be genuinely
00:12:55
Speaker 4: restored by God. Peter had to face his transgress with Jesus.
00:13:01
Speaker 4: Three times. Jesus asked Peter if he loved him. Each
00:13:05
Speaker 4: question was an invitation for Peter to feel forgiven and
00:13:09
Speaker 4: declare his love for God. Did you know that the
00:13:13
Speaker 4: same forgiveness is offered to you. Jesus wants to relieve
00:13:17
Speaker 4: you from whatever baggage you've held on to, or whatever
00:13:20
Speaker 4: shame is weighing you down. Jesus knows the mistakes you've made,
00:13:26
Speaker 4: and he knows the trauma you've experienced. He wants to
00:13:30
Speaker 4: offer you forgiveness and healing. He also wants to give
00:13:35
Speaker 4: you a mission. Each time, Jesus gave Peter a task,
00:13:40
Speaker 4: feed my lambs, tend to my sheep, and feed my sheep.
00:13:45
Speaker 4: This is because it's not enough to be forgiven of
00:13:48
Speaker 4: our past. We have to be empowered for our future.
00:13:52
Speaker 4: Jesus doesn't just want to relieve you of the burdens
00:13:55
Speaker 4: of yesterday. He wants to offer you responsibility for tomorrow.
00:14:00
Speaker 4: It's not enough to run away from our past. We
00:14:03
Speaker 4: must run to war the future. This is the gift
00:14:06
Speaker 4: Jesus offers us. He forgives us of our sins and
00:14:10
Speaker 4: then offers us new life. With him, we get to
00:14:15
Speaker 4: be a part of Christ's mission every day. After this event,
00:14:19
Speaker 4: Peter would go on to lead thousands of people to
00:14:21
Speaker 4: the Lord. He would transform the world with the other
00:14:25
Speaker 4: disciples through the Gospel. Peter went on to feed the
00:14:28
Speaker 4: sheep just as Jesus commanded, he never looked back. Even
00:14:32
Speaker 4: when threatened with death, he never denied Jesus again, Jesus
00:14:37
Speaker 4: transformed Peter, he restored him, and gave him new life.
00:14:42
Speaker 4: In this way, we know without a doubt that Jesus
00:14:46
Speaker 4: is the greater Peter. He's also the greater Us, restoring
00:14:51
Speaker 4: us and empowering us for a greater purpose than we
00:14:54
Speaker 4: could ever dream up for ourselves. Go in confident strength
00:15:02
Speaker 4: to day, knowing that the greatness of Jesus is given
00:15:05
Speaker 4: to you through His spirit. Through Christ. You can thrive
00:15:09
Speaker 4: in a fallen world like Adam. You can overcome the
00:15:12
Speaker 4: evil Cain couldn't. You can walk upright like Noah. You
00:15:16
Speaker 4: can have faith like Abraham. You can learn to humbly
00:15:20
Speaker 4: sacrifice like Isaac. You can wrestle with God and find
00:15:23
Speaker 4: victory in him. Like Jacob. You can forgive your persecutors
00:15:28
Speaker 4: like Joseph. You can lead people to freedom like Moses.
00:15:32
Speaker 4: You can tear down strongholds like Joshua. You can have
00:15:36
Speaker 4: a stronger character than Samson, be kind like Boaz and
00:15:40
Speaker 4: show courage like David. You can be wise like Solomon,
00:15:44
Speaker 4: but not fall prey to idols. You can stand up
00:15:47
Speaker 4: against corruption like Elijah and show greater obedience than Jonah.
00:15:52
Speaker 4: You can be daring in the face of culture like Daniel,
00:15:55
Speaker 4: and be restored like Peter. All these things are possible
00:16:00
Speaker 4: because you follow someone greater than all these heroes. You
00:16:04
Speaker 4: follow the mighty, powerful, loving, and great Jesus.
