The father of faith. This chosen patriarch of God stumbled through his calling, never quite able to fully live in the promise God made him. But where he fell short, Jesus followed through.
Today's Bible verse is Romans 4:3, from the King James Version.

Speaker 1: Let us pray. Abraham believed in God, and it was
00:00:04
Speaker 1: counted to him as righteousness. Romans four three. Dear Lord,
00:00:11
Speaker 1: we understand that no righteous deeds or religious ceremonies could
00:00:16
Speaker 1: ever replace pure faith in You. Trust in your promises
00:00:21
Speaker 1: and redemption are what save us, not works. Keep us humble,
00:00:27
Speaker 1: and ground it in that knowledge, so we would not
00:00:30
Speaker 1: become boastful or arrogant. Just as Abraham believed in You
00:00:35
Speaker 1: and it was accounted to him as righteousness, we declare
00:00:38
Speaker 1: belief in the work of Christ. May that faith transform us,
00:00:44
Speaker 1: empower us to live righteous lives and glorify You daily.
00:00:49
Speaker 1: In Jesus's name. Amen, Thank you for praying with me today.

00:00:59
Speaker 1: Messiah with Rabbi Schneider.
00:01:09
Speaker 2: Abram's head leaned against the stone, and slowly he drifted
00:01:14
Speaker 2: away to sleep. He closed his eyes and then opened
00:01:18
Speaker 2: them to see a terrible vision. He sprang up and
00:01:22
Speaker 2: looked around him. He saw hundreds of thousands of people
00:01:26
Speaker 2: with scars on their backs, dragging stones through the sand
00:01:30
Speaker 2: and mud. The voice of God spoke.
00:01:32
Speaker 3: To Abram, saying, know this, your offspring will be strangers
00:01:38
Speaker 3: in a land that is not theirs. There will be
00:01:41
Speaker 3: slaves there and afflicted for four hundred years.
00:01:46
Speaker 2: Abram looked at the people. They were his descendants, a
00:01:49
Speaker 2: vast sea of faces, all somehow from him. Their image faded,
00:01:54
Speaker 2: and Abram was shown a mighty torrent of water thrashing
00:01:58
Speaker 2: against an army, and it is descendants running towards safety.
00:02:02
Speaker 4: I will bring judgment on their oppressors, and once I
00:02:06
Speaker 4: have freed them, they will have.
00:02:08
Speaker 3: A great reward.
00:02:11
Speaker 2: Abram looked around him as millions flooded the valley he
00:02:14
Speaker 2: called home. They outnumbered the stars. Then he saw nothing.
00:02:20
Speaker 2: It was just him and the Lord God spoke tenderly
00:02:23
Speaker 2: to him, saying, ask.
00:02:26
Speaker 3: For you, Abrahm, you will have peace.

Speaker 5: walk with God. It's my hope that this podcast would
00:03:03
Speaker 5: showcase the true hero of the Bible, Jesus, as heroic
00:03:09
Speaker 5: and admirable as Noah, Abraham, and Moses are. They are
00:03:14
Speaker 5: mere images of the true hero who came after them,
00:03:18
Speaker 5: the redeemer of the world, the savior of mankind, and
00:03:22
Speaker 5: the author of our faith. So join me now as
00:03:27
Speaker 5: we immerse ourselves in a cinematic retelling of Genesis chapter fifteen,
00:03:34
Speaker 5: where God beckons Abram out of his tent to gaze
00:03:37
Speaker 5: at the stars. Within them is a promise, a promise
00:03:42
Speaker 5: of a greater hero that will come from his lineage.
00:03:45
Speaker 5: Let's begin.
00:03:48
Speaker 2: Fear not, the voice called out. Abram sat up in
00:03:52
Speaker 2: a sweat. He looked around for the source of the voice,
00:03:55
Speaker 2: but he could only see Sarai sleeping beside him.
00:03:58
Speaker 3: Fear not, Abram, the voice said again.
00:04:02
Speaker 2: Abram looked forward. A cool breeze blew in from the
00:04:05
Speaker 2: entrance of his tent. He stood to his feet and
00:04:08
Speaker 2: walked outside. God was beckoning him, drawing him out of
00:04:14
Speaker 2: slumber and into a vision. He heard the voice of
00:04:17
Speaker 2: God again. This time it seemed he was speaking all
00:04:21
Speaker 2: around and within him. Fear not, Abram, I am your
00:04:25
Speaker 2: shield and your great reward. Abram paused and considered God's declaration.
00:04:30
Speaker 2: As the cool breeze brought the scent of falling leaves
00:04:33
Speaker 2: through the valley, his bottom lip quivered slightly, both from
00:04:37
Speaker 2: the cold and from the sadness within his heart. He
00:04:41
Speaker 2: closed his eyes and replied, O, Lord God, whatever reward
00:04:46
Speaker 2: you have for me does not matter.
00:04:47
Speaker 6: If I continue, child.
00:04:49
Speaker 2: Miss, my treasure will pass with me and be given
00:04:52
Speaker 2: to my servant, and my name would die along with me.
00:04:57
Speaker 2: Abram's doubt was not a denial of God's promise, rather
00:05:00
Speaker 2: a desire for God's promise. He wanted it to be true,
00:05:04
Speaker 2: but the one desire of his heart had eluded him.
00:05:07
Speaker 2: God's presence surrounded Abram. He was enveloped in the comforting
00:05:12
Speaker 2: embrace of the Lord Almighty.
00:05:14
Speaker 3: Oh Abrahm, a son from your flesh will be given
00:05:19
Speaker 3: to you.
00:05:19
Speaker 2: God's presence called Abram to walk up a small grassy
00:05:23
Speaker 2: hill like the gentle nudge of a father.
00:05:26
Speaker 3: Looker and the heavens, God whispered.
00:05:29
Speaker 2: Abram turned his gaze towards the heavens. Casting his gaze upward,
00:05:33
Speaker 2: his eyes met a cosmic tapestry that stretched infinitely beyond
00:05:37
Speaker 2: his reach, unobstructed by clouds, are earthly illumination, A myriad
00:05:44
Speaker 2: of twinkling stars painted the knight canvas, each a distant sun,
00:05:49
Speaker 2: a silent testament to the vastness of the universe. Abram
00:05:54
Speaker 2: found himself entranced, humbled, and insignificant. God spoke to Abram's
00:06:00
Speaker 2: heart in this state of awe, saying, your descendants without
00:06:04
Speaker 2: number the stars, through you, all the nations of the
00:06:09
Speaker 2: world will be blessed. Abram's heart melted as he surveyed
00:06:15
Speaker 2: the expanse of heaven. He realized just how incredible it
00:06:19
Speaker 2: was that the creator of the stars considered him, knew him.
00:06:23
Speaker 1: And loved him. Abram believed God.
00:06:27
Speaker 2: He had faith that the Lord would follow through with
00:06:30
Speaker 2: his promises. That belief, that faith, is what made Abraham righteous.
00:06:36
Speaker 2: No deed, ceremony, or religious gesture would ever replace that
00:06:41
Speaker 2: pure trust in God's word. Abram looked up at the heavens,
00:06:46
Speaker 2: tears fogging his vision, and whispered to the Lord, Oh,
00:06:50
Speaker 2: shall these things happen?
00:06:52
Speaker 3: Bring me a heaven goat, rare, turtle, dove, and pigeon.
00:06:58
Speaker 2: The Lord replied, Ibram knew exactly what God was requesting
00:07:02
Speaker 2: In his culture, covenants were made through sacrifice. Two people
00:07:07
Speaker 2: making promises would split animals in half and walk through
00:07:10
Speaker 2: the middle to seal the covenant with blood. Meant that
00:07:13
Speaker 2: if one were to break that promise, it would mean death.
00:07:18
Speaker 2: God intended to make an unbreakable vow with Abram, a
00:07:21
Speaker 2: promise sealed in blood that would endure throughout the generations.
00:07:26
Speaker 2: Abram took his eyes off the heavens and retreated to
00:07:29
Speaker 2: his tent. The following day, he gathered the necessary animals,
00:07:33
Speaker 2: split them in half, then waited. The sun's heavy rays
00:07:38
Speaker 2: were briefly shaded by the wings of vultures flying overhead.
00:07:43
Speaker 2: They descended on the carcasses of the animals, but Abraham
00:07:46
Speaker 2: fought them off. Thrashing and screaming. He scared them away,
00:07:50
Speaker 2: then sat on a stone and panted. Abram was sure
00:07:54
Speaker 2: God would show up. He had heard his voice so clearly.
00:07:58
Speaker 2: Abram leaned back and looked out on the horizon. He
00:08:02
Speaker 2: waited for God's voice to return. He waited all day, staring, praying, pondering.
00:08:11
Speaker 2: Faith kept him hopeful. The day drew on, and Abram
00:08:14
Speaker 2: watched the sun slowly descend over the valley. Hues of
00:08:18
Speaker 2: orange and crimson splashed the skies, matching the blood soaking
00:08:22
Speaker 2: the ground near the slain animals. Abram's head leaned against
00:08:27
Speaker 2: the stone, and slowly he drifted away to sleep. He
00:08:31
Speaker 2: closed his eyes, then opened them to see a terrible vision.
00:08:36
Speaker 2: He sprang up and looked around him. He saw hundreds
00:08:40
Speaker 2: of thousands of people with scars on their backs, dragging
00:08:43
Speaker 2: stones through sand and mud. The voice of God spoke
00:08:46
Speaker 2: to Abram, saying, know.
00:08:48
Speaker 3: This, your offspring will be strangers in the land that
00:08:52
Speaker 3: is not theirs. They will be slaves there in afflicted
00:08:57
Speaker 3: for four hundred years.
00:08:59
Speaker 2: Abram looked at the people. They were his descendants, a
00:09:04
Speaker 2: vast sea of faces, all somehow from him. Their image faded,
00:09:08
Speaker 2: and Abram was shown a mighty torrent of water thrashing
00:09:11
Speaker 2: against an army, and his descendants running towards safety.
00:09:15
Speaker 4: I will bring judgment on their oppressors, and once I
00:09:19
Speaker 4: have freed them, they will have.
00:09:22
Speaker 3: A great reward.
00:09:24
Speaker 2: Abram looked around as millions flooded the valley he called home.
00:09:29
Speaker 3: They outnumbered the stars. Then he saw nothing.
00:09:35
Speaker 2: It was just him, and the Lord God spoke tenderly
00:09:38
Speaker 2: to him, saying.
00:09:40
Speaker 3: Ask for you, Abraham, You will have peace.
00:09:44
Speaker 2: Abram opened his eyes to see something miraculous. God had
00:09:49
Speaker 2: passed through the sacrifices himself. A smoking firepot and a
00:09:54
Speaker 2: flaming torch stood at the other end of them. God
00:09:58
Speaker 2: had made his promise to Abram and his offspring without him.
00:10:02
Speaker 2: But what if the blood that's required if I break
00:10:06
Speaker 2: my part of the covenant, Abram wondered, God.
00:10:11
Speaker 1: Was the one to pass through himself.
00:10:14
Speaker 2: That means God would be the one to die if
00:10:17
Speaker 2: Abram and his descendants broke their promise. God would later
00:10:21
Speaker 2: rename Abram, making him Abraham a father of nations. He
00:10:26
Speaker 2: said that through his seed, all the nations would be blessed.
00:10:30
Speaker 2: A son from his lineage would rise to redeem and
00:10:33
Speaker 2: bless the world. Abraham eagerly awaited that time. He believed
00:10:38
Speaker 2: in the future redemption. He hoped for that future blessing,
00:10:43
Speaker 2: and one day he would meet the promised son in eternity.
00:10:52
Speaker 5: What a moving moment between God and Abram. Could you
00:10:56
Speaker 5: feel the intimacy between them? Could you sense Abram doubt
00:11:00
Speaker 5: melting away under the warm embrace of his heavenly father.
00:11:07
Speaker 5: It makes sense that Abram would be doubtful of God's
00:11:09
Speaker 5: promises think about it. He was bold and had tried
00:11:13
Speaker 5: to have children for years. He feared all his blessings
00:11:17
Speaker 5: wouldn't be shared with his descendants. But God comforted Abram
00:11:23
Speaker 5: and made a promise that his offspring would outnumber the
00:11:27
Speaker 5: stars in the sky. They would multiply, suffer from slavery,
00:11:33
Speaker 5: be rescued, and prosper in the land promised to them,
00:11:37
Speaker 5: and through them a greater hero would come. Abram took
00:11:43
Speaker 5: all of this in and had faith in God. That
00:11:46
Speaker 5: faith was accounted to him as righteousness. It wasn't any
00:11:51
Speaker 5: good deeds, holy exploits, or obedience that made him righteous.
00:11:56
Speaker 5: It was his belief in the promises of God. To
00:12:00
Speaker 5: seal the promise he made to Abram, God made a covenant.
00:12:04
Speaker 5: He had Abram prepare sacrifices for them to walk through together.
00:12:09
Speaker 5: These type of contracts were weighty back then. That's why
00:12:13
Speaker 5: God walked through the sacrifice on his own. He was
00:12:17
Speaker 5: going to bear sole responsibility for the promise. If Abram
00:12:22
Speaker 5: or any of his descendants broke the covenant, God would
00:12:25
Speaker 5: pay the penalty, not them. He would eventually do that
00:12:29
Speaker 5: through the sacrifice of Jesus. Abram was eventually renamed Abraham,
00:12:35
Speaker 5: and God promised that all the nations would be blessed
00:12:38
Speaker 5: one day through his seed. Abraham looked forward to that time.
00:12:44
Speaker 5: He hoped in God and believed his promised descendant would
00:12:47
Speaker 5: save the world. He knew his prophesied son would be
00:12:52
Speaker 5: greater than him, mightier. Now let's fast forward to when
00:12:57
Speaker 5: Abraham's descendants are great in number. They have an established
00:13:02
Speaker 5: culture and way of life. They look back at Abraham
00:13:06
Speaker 5: as the ultimate example of righteousness. But they seem to
00:13:09
Speaker 5: have forgotten that someone greater than him was supposed to
00:13:12
Speaker 5: come shore straight.
00:13:16
Speaker 2: Mitchet, one of the scribes, shouted from a group of
00:13:18
Speaker 2: Jewish leaders.
00:13:20
Speaker 6: You are a Samaritan dog cannot possessed by a demon.
00:13:25
Speaker 2: The crowd stirred, uncomfortable.
00:13:27
Speaker 1: With the accusation.
00:13:28
Speaker 2: Jesus remained calm under scrutiny, His eyes pierced through his accusers.
00:13:34
Speaker 2: He exhaled and shook his head.
00:13:36
Speaker 6: I do not have a demon, he replied, matter of factly.
00:13:39
Speaker 6: I honor my father in all things. Yet you stand
00:13:42
Speaker 6: here in dishonor me. I won't fretter with this though,
00:13:46
Speaker 6: for I do not seek my own glory. There's only
00:13:49
Speaker 6: one who seeks my glory, and he's the ultimate judge
00:13:52
Speaker 6: between you and me.
00:13:54
Speaker 2: He looked away from the group of accusers, turned to
00:13:56
Speaker 2: the crowd and said, truly, truly say.
00:14:00
Speaker 6: To you, if anyone keeps my words, you never see death.
00:14:05
Speaker 2: The group of scribes and pharisees stirred. Their holy veneer
00:14:08
Speaker 2: was slowly eroding, giving way to a more perturbed and
00:14:12
Speaker 2: petty countenance. Now we are sure that you have a deem.
00:14:15
Speaker 1: They shouted.
00:14:16
Speaker 2: They began to spit on the floor and mock him.
00:14:19
Speaker 2: Abraham died, as did all the prophets.
00:14:23
Speaker 6: Yet you say, whoever keeps your word will never taste death.
00:14:28
Speaker 5: Who do you think you are?
00:14:30
Speaker 2: You think you're greater than Abraham. The Jews postured to
00:14:34
Speaker 2: threaten Jesus, but he remained unperturbed by their presence. Jesus
00:14:38
Speaker 2: stepped towards them, and they took a few paces back
00:14:41
Speaker 2: as he approached.
00:14:43
Speaker 6: I would tell you again, I do not aim to
00:14:45
Speaker 6: give myself glory.
00:14:46
Speaker 2: If I did, it would mean nothing. It is my
00:14:49
Speaker 2: father who glorifies me, your God.
00:14:52
Speaker 5: But you don't know him, do you.
00:14:55
Speaker 6: I know him, and your father Abraham knew him.
00:14:59
Speaker 2: He rejoiced that one day he would get to see me.
00:15:02
Speaker 6: He had faith in him and.
00:15:03
Speaker 2: Was filled with joy.
00:15:04
Speaker 1: Ridiculous, they shouted.
00:15:06
Speaker 6: You're not even fifty years old, yet you claim to
00:15:09
Speaker 6: see in Abraham.
00:15:10
Speaker 2: Jesus's gentle countenance shifted slightly at that moment. It was
00:15:14
Speaker 2: as if the air around him became thick with glory.
00:15:18
Speaker 2: Jesus spoke, his voice resounding with calm authority.
00:15:22
Speaker 6: I was before Abraham, before Abraham, was the great I Am.
00:15:29
Speaker 2: Those were the words they had been waiting for. Jesus
00:15:32
Speaker 2: had claimed to be God himself. With zealous rage, the
00:15:37
Speaker 2: Jews ran to retrieve stones. They wanted to end Jesus's life.
00:15:43
Speaker 2: Jealous and indignant, they turned with rocks to hurl at Jesus,
00:15:47
Speaker 2: but he had vanished. He had escaped from the temple
00:15:51
Speaker 2: just in time.
00:15:53
Speaker 5: One day, the.
00:15:53
Speaker 2: Jewish leaders would successfully execute Jesus, but they would do
00:15:57
Speaker 2: so on his timing, not theirs. He would use death
00:16:01
Speaker 2: as a tool to fulfill the promise made to Abraham
00:16:04
Speaker 2: long ago. He would be the seed that sprung up
00:16:08
Speaker 2: from the line of Abraham to bless every nation.
00:16:14
Speaker 5: Abraham indeed became the father of a great nation. God's
00:16:19
Speaker 5: promise to Abraham was kept, and the children of Israel
00:16:21
Speaker 5: were preserved through slavery, wilderness, war, oppression, and pride despite themselves.
00:16:30
Speaker 5: God was faithful through them. The great hero of Heaven came,
00:16:36
Speaker 5: but not everyone recognized him as the Messiah right away.
00:16:41
Speaker 5: Jesus was continually challenged about his identity. But we know
00:16:45
Speaker 5: now that he is the promised Redeemer, the seed from
00:16:50
Speaker 5: Abraham that would bless every nation. In his discourse with
00:16:54
Speaker 5: the religious leaders, he declared that he was there before Abraham.
00:16:59
Speaker 5: He said, before Abraham was the great i Am. Before
00:17:03
Speaker 5: Abraham was the great i Am. What does that mean.
00:17:08
Speaker 5: That means that Jesus pre existed Abraham and life itself.
00:17:14
Speaker 5: He was the one who spoke life and light into existence.
00:17:19
Speaker 5: He was the one who fashioned man from the dust
00:17:22
Speaker 5: and crafted the heavens and the earth. Jesus was God himself.
00:17:29
Speaker 5: In this way, Jesus is more than just a patriarch
00:17:32
Speaker 5: of faith or a member of a great lineage. He
00:17:36
Speaker 5: is God. He's not just a man of faith. He
00:17:39
Speaker 5: is the one we put our faith in. Through Jesus,
00:17:46
Speaker 5: the lineage of Abraham was extended beyond just a bloodline.
00:17:50
Speaker 5: He unified different nations, cultures, and creeds under the banner
00:17:54
Speaker 5: of faith into a nation of faith. Under the banner
00:17:58
Speaker 5: of faith, into a nation of faith the Church. Because
00:18:03
Speaker 5: of all this and more, Jesus is greater than Abraham.
00:18:10
Speaker 5: Be sure to join us next time as we explore
00:18:12
Speaker 5: another patriarch in the lineage of Abraham. This man is
00:18:16
Speaker 5: not known for his courage or strength. In fact, he
00:18:20
Speaker 5: willingly submitted himself to be killed by his own father.
00:18:25
Speaker 5: Join us next episode to discover why Jesus is the
00:18:28
Speaker 5: greater Isaac
