00:00:00 Speaker 1: Not every one who says to me, Lord Lord, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father, who is in heaven Matthew seven twenty one. Dear Lord, we come to you with hearts full of gratitude for your boundless love and mercy. Thank you for the gift of your word, which guides us and reveals your will for our lives. We recognize that it is not enough to merely call upon your name with our lips, but we must also honor you with our actions and hearts. If you've been inspired by these podcasts, we would love it if you left a review. Jesus saw their eager faces. He could feel the enthusiasm radiating from them. They leaned in close, silently repeating his words to themselves. He knew that many would flock to him after this. Many would proclaim his name, shouting to the roof tops that they believed. Yet the proclamations of the mouth and the works of the hand can be deceitful. It was the state of the heart that mattered most. With this truth weighing heavily on his mind, Jesus continued his sermon, saying, not. 00:03:10 Speaker 2: Every one who says to me, Lord Lord, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father, who is in heaven. On that day, many will say to me, Lord Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and cast out demons in your name? And do many mighty works in your name? And then I would declare to them, I never knew you. Depart from me, your workers of lawlessness. Hear me, friends, and listen. It is not enough to proclaim, nor are lofty prophecies enough to purify the heart. You must know God. 00:03:53 Speaker 3: Are you in pain after walking, running, or even just standing. Join us as we conclude our miniseries through the Sermon on the Mount. We've been connecting biblical stories to the gospel message of Jesus spoken on the Sermon on the Mount. Today we delve into a critical teaching from Jesus's Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew chapter seven, verses twenty one through twenty three. This passage addresses the importance of true discipleship and warns against false professions of faith. We'll connect this teaching to the story of Simon the Sorcerer and Acts chapter eight, verses nine through twenty five, exploring how outward displays of faith must be rooted in genuine transformation and obedience to God. Together, we will learn to discern the authenticity of our faith and align our lives with God's will. 00:06:04 Speaker 1: In the heart of Samaria, where stone paved streets wound like serpents between the sun bleached buildings, there lived a man of formidable reputation. The people called him Simon. The whispers of his other titles danced in the air like ghostly tendrils the great power of God. They murmured with awe and fear. For Simon the Sorcerer was a man not to be trifled with. He was a man acquainted with alchemy, tonics, and different forms of sorcery. With the right concoction, he could make a man feel what he wanted him to feel. With the right incantations, he could summon spirits to perform signs. Simon's assent of fame had been as mysterious as the man himself. He had come from humble beginnings, a nameless child from a forgotten village, but within him burned a hunger as vast and insatiable as the desert sands. In those early days, he had wandered far and wide, delving into the arcane arts, seeking knowledge and places where the light of day dared not venture Simon sat in his grand hole, a small temple smelling of wet stone and incense. People would come to him there. They asked for signs from God. They wanted their moods altered and fortunes told. Simon met their needs for a price. 00:07:55 Speaker 4: Simon, please consult God and tell me if my crops will yield this. 00:08:00 Speaker 2: Yet, I shall consult the sands. 00:08:04 Speaker 1: Simon took out a sack of dark ebony sand and threw it onto the floor. He crouched down and blew, whispering incantations he'd learned from foreign lands. His practice was disingenuous at best, and blatantly evil at its worst. 00:08:23 Speaker 2: I see what God decease. 00:08:27 Speaker 4: I hear what he hears. 00:08:31 Speaker 2: An evil weed seeks to choke out your crop, hindering its rules. The sun's scorch will likely cause them to wither. 00:08:44 Speaker 1: Unless Simon retrieved a sack of ground goat bones he waded in his hand. A slight smile coiling around his mouth, the man bowed his head and left, grateful and anxious. The people of Samaria revered Simon, and why should they not. Local legends whispered that Simon could conjure flames from thin air, summon storms from a whisper, and bend the will of man and beast alike to them. Simon was more than a sorcerer. 00:09:25 Speaker 4: He was a god. 00:09:26 Speaker 1: Among men, and in their eyes his power was good. That was until a new force entered the land, carried on the lips of travelers and merchants, a man named Philip. Simon watched from the alleyway, his face hidden beneath the hood, he peered out, observing every move Philip made. The man didn't wear the garb of a priest, nor carry himself like a prophet. His clothes were ragged, his beard untrimmed. It is face radiated purpose. He addressed the crowd, his voice bolstered by some unseen authority. 00:10:20 Speaker 4: It was faith that moved our father Abraham, faith that one day, through his seed, all the nations will be blessed. I've come here to tell you that the promised seed of Abraham has come. He is Jesus, and the faith that moved Abraham to greatness can move you too. 00:10:42 Speaker 1: Simon's ears perked up at the words greatness. He had heard rumors about the man from Nazareth named Jesus. He had heard stories of healed lepers and multiplied bread. 00:10:56 Speaker 4: Truly, I tell you, if you have faith as small as a must have seen, you can say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. 00:11:09 Speaker 1: Just then, Simon saw Philip approach a lame man sitting on the ground. He walked with gentle steps and reached out a hand. Philip's eyes were earnest warm. He spoke with words that didn't seem to be his. 00:11:26 Speaker 4: Own brother, get up and walk. 00:11:30 Speaker 1: Simon's eyes widened with disbelief as he watched the lame man stretch his legs, roll his ankles, and rise to his feet. Gasps from the crowd gave way to cheers. Philip seized the opportunity. 00:11:48 Speaker 4: Repent, believe in Jesus that he died on the cross for the sins of mankind, and rose again in power. Let faith move, you be baptised and followed Jesus. 00:12:01 Speaker 1: Droves of people raced to Philip, hands stretched out, eager to experience freedom from sin and power from the spirit. Simon found his legs moving forward. He was drawn to the power Philip had. Whatever spirit compelled him, Simon desired. He moved with the tide of the crowd following Philip to the water. 00:12:28 Speaker 4: Do you confess that Jesus is Lord and that, through the power of God's Spirit was raised to life after death? 00:12:34 Speaker 5: I do, Jesus is Lord. Then be baptized, my friend, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:12:46 Speaker 1: Simon was baptized, caught up in the euphoria of the crowd, eager to experience the power Philip had, But as he emerged from the water, he felt nothing. He didn't sense a force within, nor did he feel energy coursing through his veins. 00:13:06 Speaker 4: Power. I want that power. 00:13:10 Speaker 1: Simon tugged at Philip's garment and spoke in an innocent voice. 00:13:15 Speaker 2: Philip, I want to do what you do, Simes wanders healings. 00:13:22 Speaker 4: Show me how patience, brother, you have yet to receive the Holy Spirit. Come. I will gather the others and visit Peter and John. They will lay hands on you and commission you for the great ministry Christ has called you to. 00:13:37 Speaker 1: Simon followed Philip and the others to meet with John and Peter. He walked eagerly, patting behind them like a child. He expected them to be escorted to a temple of opulence, where Peter and John would receive them adorned with jeweled, encrusted medallions and golden laced robes. Yet, to Simon's dismay, they wore fishermen's garbs. The one they called Peter was a burly man with unkempt hair. 00:14:09 Speaker 4: The one they. 00:14:10 Speaker 1: Called John looked no older than seventeen. 00:14:13 Speaker 4: Brothers and sisters, we give thanks to God, the father of our Lord Jesus, that you have been redeemed and brought near. Welcome to the community of Christ. Come, let's lay hands on you so that you may receive the Holy Spirit, empowered and emboldened for the mission ahead. 00:14:32 Speaker 2: Lord God, we pray that you'd adorn your children with the spirit, fill them afresh, awakening gifts to glorify your name. 00:14:41 Speaker 1: Simon watched incredibly as each person around him became empowered by the Holy Spirit, a tangible difference in their countenance. This was the power Philip had, the power Simon desperately. 00:14:56 Speaker 2: Wanted Peter John hello. 00:15:00 Speaker 1: Simon pushed through the crowd and reached into his purse A large sack of silver weighed his palm. A wry grin painted his face. 00:15:11 Speaker 2: How much for the power you wield. Name your prize? What do you mean you are men of great power able to give it to others? I want that power? How much can I pay you for your services? I have acquired much silver. 00:15:32 Speaker 4: In my life. 00:15:33 Speaker 2: No prize will be too high for me. 00:15:37 Speaker 1: Peter's gaze became intense. He darted his eyes to Philip. Felip, where did you find this man? Peter turned to Simon, eyes hot with conviction. His deep voice and Galilean accent added volume to his intense. 00:15:54 Speaker 4: Rebuke Keep your silver. 00:15:57 Speaker 2: Well, I'm surprised you wouldn't accept my offer. Is there something else you want? Then? You know I have connections in other places, places of influence. I'm certain they would be very helpful in getting this little religion of yours off the ground. Perhaps that's more your fancy, eh. 00:16:20 Speaker 4: Keep your silver and may it perish with you. You think you can obtain the gift of God with money, You're sorely mistaken. You have no part nor lot in the matter of the spirit. Your heart is in right before God. 00:16:37 Speaker 2: How dare you? Do you know who I am? Do you know what they call me? I am Simon, the Great Power of God. 00:16:50 Speaker 4: Repent Simon turn from the wicked avarice that grips your heart. 00:16:54 Speaker 2: Eh, will forgive me, sir, I think we got off on the wrong foot. 00:16:58 Speaker 4: Tie, no, no, do not ask for my forgiveness. Pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven. I see you, Simon, I see your heart. You are trapped in the gall of bitterness and chained as a slave to iniquity. 00:17:21 Speaker 1: Simon paused, throat clenched and chest beating rapidly. He felt exposed, embarrassed, and angry. Yet his tongue couldn't unravel to defend himself. Deep down, he knew Peter's arrow was aimed true. Simon had a choice before him. Would he remain powerless, content to proclaim the name of Jesus without the power of Jesus, or would he humble himself before God and change his heart. He was still unresolved, barely inching out a whispered apology. 00:18:09 Speaker 2: Pray for me, then, pray to the Lord on my behalf, that what you have said will not come to pass. 00:18:20 Speaker 4: Not everyone who says to me, Lord Lord, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who's in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Lord Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons, and in your name perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers. Jesus warns that not all who profess to follow him will enter the Kingdom of heaven. Only those who do the will of the Father will be recognized as true disciples. This teaching emphasizes the necessity of genuine obedience and relationship with God over mere outward disas dilas of spirituality. The story of Simon the Sorcerer provides a powerful example of someone who made a false profession of faith, seeking personal gain rather than genuine transformation. Simon, a magician in Samaria, amazed people with his sorcery and claimed to be somewhat great. In Acts Chapter eight, verses nine through thirteen, we read, now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, this man is rightly called the Great Power of God. They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Simon himself believed and was baptized, and he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. Despite his outward profession of faith and his baptism, Simon's true motives were revealed when he saw the apostles imparting the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands, he offered them money to receive this power. In Acts, Chapter eight, verses eighteen through twenty three, we read when Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles hands, he offered them money and said, give me also this ability, so that every one on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit. Peter answered, may your money perish with you because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money. You have no part or share in this ministry because your heart is not right before God. Repent of this wickedness, and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart, For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin. Simon's desire for power and recognition revealed that his heart was not truly transformed. His profession of faith was superficial, motivated by personal gain rather than genuine repentance and obedience to God. Jesus emphasizes that true disciples are those who do the will of the Father. Genuine faith is reflected in our actions and our obedience to God's commands. It is not enough to merely profess belief. Our lives must align with God's will and reflect his character. Does this mean that God needs us to be perfect in order to go to Heaven? Of course not. What Jesus is emphasizing is the heart. Simon's story reveals that his heart wasn't in the right place. Simon's story illustrates the necessity of heart transformation in true discipleship. Outward displays of faith, such as baptism or miraculous works are meaningless if our hearts are not right before God. True discipleship begins with a heart that is genuinely transformed by God's grace. Simon's desire to buy spiritual power for personal gain is in sharp contrast with the selflessness that characterizes true discipleship. We must reject the pursuit of personal gain or recognition in our spiritual lives, focusing instead on serving God and others with humility. Peter's call for Simon to repent highlights the importance of repentance and genuine discipleship. When we recognize areas of our lives that are not aligned with God's will, we must repent and seek his forgiveness, allowing him to transform our hearts and lives. So how can we truly evaluate the genuineness of our faith without becoming rigid or creating unnecessary measurements that make us legalistic. First, evaluate your heart regularly. Examine your motives and your actions. Ask yourself if your faith is driven by a genuine love for God and a desire to do his will, or some other selfish motive motives such as getting rich or gaining influence. Evaluating our hearts help us to identify areas that need transformation and growth. Second, seek heart transformation. Pray for God to transform your heart and align your desires with his. Seek a deeper relationship with Him, allowing his grace to shape your character and your actions. Heart transformation involves ongoing surrender and openness to God's work in our lives. Remember, following God isn't about ease. Third, reject personal gain. Focus on serving God and others selflessly rather than seeking personal gain or recognition. Strive to live a life that reflects the humility and selflessness of Jesus. Rejecting personal gain means prioritizing God's purposes and the well being of others over our own ambitions. Lastly, repent and seek forgiveness at the feet of Jesus. Simon said the word words and went down to the water to be baptized. But he didn't look at his heart. He didn't consider his own sin. He didn't ask God to transform him from the inside out. When you recognize sin or wrong motives in your life, repent and seek God's forgiveness. Allow his grace to cleanse and transform you, leading you to deeper obedience and faithfulness. Repentance is a continual process of turning away from sin and turning towards God's love and grace. As we reflect on Jesus's words in Matthew Chapter seven, Verses twenty one through twenty three, and the story of Simon the Sorcerer. Let us be reminded of the importance of genuine discipleship. May we strive to do the will of the Father, seeking part transformation, rejecting personal gain, and living lives marked by repentance and obedience. Let us pray for the grace and wisdom to be true citizens of Heaven, living out the genuine faith that Jesus calls us to. This concludes our miniseries connecting the Sermon on the Mount with other biblical stories. In our next miniseries, we'll focus on different events and teachings that contrasted Jesus with the status quo. We'll call it Jesus the Disruptor.
