Speaker 1: looking deep into her eyes, and laughed right along with her.

Speaker 1: Sarah looked back into his eyes. She realized this was

Speaker 1: the first time in a long time that Abraham had

Speaker 1: truly looked at her and seen her. She curled up

Speaker 1: into his large arms, old but still tight with strength.

Speaker 1: Her sharp pain jolted Sarah back to the present, the

Speaker 1: pressure in her lower back unbearable. The midwife's voice urged her.

Speaker 6: On, my lady, you're almost there. I can see the head.

Speaker 1: Sarah did as the midwife had bid her to do.

Speaker 1: her screaming, almost an out of body experience, Sarah heard

Speaker 1: A flock of midwives and servants had showed Abraham away

Speaker 1: that morning from his tent when Sarah's labors began. Shoot Abraham,

Speaker 1: like a child, but he reluctantly departed. This was woman's work.

Speaker 1: process to Ishmael. Ishmael was attentive to his teacher, but

Speaker 1: he was always perceptive. He kept one eye on his

Speaker 1: father and assessed his demeanor. The shepherd was droning on

Speaker 1: about cleaning and maintaining the tools when Elieza came running

Speaker 1: he approached. Abraham was afraid to speak, as if the

Speaker 1: slightest whisper might blow the moment away. He softly, slowly

Speaker 1: reached out for Isaac. Then, just as his hands were

Speaker 1: about to touch him, the baby tensed, made a strange sound,

Speaker 1: began to cry, and immediately a yellowish brown liquid spilled

Speaker 1: all over Sarah's arm. The baby relaxed and went back

Speaker 1: to sleep. Abraham looked at Sarah, and Sarah to Abraham. Then,

Speaker 1: like two singers harmonizing to a tune, they both began

Speaker 1: to laugh. They laughed until tears streamed down their faces.

Speaker 1: Everyone in the room began to harmonize with them. Years

Speaker 1: finally released, ironically, just like the babies. Eight days later,

Speaker 1: after the circumcision ritual, Abraham was repeating the same story

Speaker 1: he had been telling for as many days to anyone

Speaker 1: he came across.

Speaker 7: When I entered the tent and saw Sarah cradling our boy,

Speaker 7: our Isaac, she burst out laughing, and I started laughing,

Speaker 7: and then everyone in the room was laughing. The God

Speaker 7: Almighty had already foretold his name, but here we all

Speaker 1: Abraham and Sarah were positively giddy. Guests and servants alike

Speaker 1: had never seen anything like it, but their joy and

Speaker 4: in all our laughter. God made me laugh when I

Speaker 4: first learned of his intentions for my life, but now

Speaker 1: Just beyond the opening of the tent stood the now

Speaker 1: thirteen year old Ishmael. He was on the cusp of manhood,

Speaker 1: and by custom and law, had been raised to become

Speaker 1: a clan leader. But in the span of nine months,

Speaker 1: Ishmael's future became uncertain. Ishmael loved his father and wanted

Speaker 1: him to be happy, but all this laughing was beginning

Speaker 1: to grate on him. Each peer of laughter and joy
00:14:01
Speaker 1: turned to mockery in Ishmael's ears. Their joy was his loss.

Speaker 1: Ishmael mourned the loss of both his father's favor and

Speaker 1: his inheritance. In the midst of the celebration of his

Speaker 1: half brother Isaac.

Speaker 5: Sarah, elderly and long past child bearing age, laughed at

Speaker 5: God's promise.

Speaker 5: Sometimes God's promises can seem absurd, but then God shows

Speaker 5: up and what once seemed impossible becomes the reality. And

Speaker 5: that is exactly what happened here. Impossibility became reality, Isaac

Speaker 5: was born, and laughter follows. It's a reminder that God's

Speaker 5: timing is not our timing. God moves in his own
00:14:58
Speaker 5: mysterious ways to his own divine rhythm, creating joy out

Speaker 5: of doubt and despair. And that's what God does here,

Speaker 5: he brings life to what was once baron. But before
00:15:14
Speaker 5: we get to God's joyous miracle, I want to take
00:15:16
Speaker 5: a look at the chapter's first verse, which seems pretty
00:15:20
Speaker 5: standard at first glance. It reads, and the Lord visited Sarah.

Speaker 5: But the Hebrew word used here for visited is pakad,
00:15:33
Speaker 5: which also means remembered or to count. It's basically making
00:15:39
Speaker 5: sure that nothing is missing. Let me say that again.
00:15:44
Speaker 5: And the Lord visited Sarah is how it's translated to English,
00:15:50
Speaker 5: but the word in Hebrew is pakad, which really means
00:15:54
Speaker 5: and the Lord remembered or counted Sarah. There was something

Speaker 5: clearly missing in Sarah's baron womb, which God remembered what

Speaker 5: had been a void God suddenly filled. Now let's think

Speaker 5: where else have we already seen that? Well, we've seen
00:16:15
Speaker 5: it from the very beginning, haven't we. When the earth

Speaker 5: was barren and lifeless, God's rua, his breath hovered over
00:16:23
Speaker 5: the void and breathed life and light into existence. This

Speaker 5: is also what God did as Abraham looked out over

Speaker 5: the barn uninhabited land. This is what God always does,

Speaker 5: he remembers. He takes count, and he fills the void

Speaker 5: with exactly what is missing. God speaks, moves, and acts,

Speaker 5: creating something out of nothing. Ysh me a'in, as we

Speaker 5: say in Hebrew, he did that in the story of creation.

Speaker 5: He does this in our life. And he did this

Speaker 5: in Sarah's life. Back in Genesis eighteen, when Sarah heard

Speaker 5: she would bear a child in her advanced age, she laughed.

Speaker 5: Why was she laughing? Well, she laughed in disbelief. But

Speaker 5: here in chapter twenty one, Sarah does in fact give

Speaker 5: birth to a son, Isaac, and she says in verse six,

Speaker 5: God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about
00:17:30
Speaker 5: this will laugh with me. I want you to hear

Speaker 5: this beautiful verse. In the original Hebrew Vitomar Sarah sok

Speaker 5: This time, Sarah was laughing again, not in disbelief, but

Speaker 5: in great joy that she and Abraham would have a

Speaker 5: son who could carry on the great adventure that they

Speaker 5: had begun with God, the adventure of the Chosen people.

Speaker 5: That if Isaac wasn't born, it would have just ended then.

Speaker 5: And so this is not just a joy for them,

Speaker 5: for Sarah and Abraham, this is a joy for the

Speaker 5: whole world, one that the whole world would be joyful about,

Speaker 5: would laugh about forever. The name Isaac forever marks this transformation,

Speaker 5: from the laugh of skepticism to the laugh of faith,

Speaker 5: from the laugh of doubt to the laugh of fulfillment,

Speaker 5: for not just this elderly couple, but for God's people

Speaker 5: and the entire world. This is the heart of the story.

Speaker 5: Isaac's birth is so much more than just the arrival

Speaker 5: of a promised child. It's the divine statement about God's faithfulness.

Speaker 5: Our laughter of doubt doesn't negate God's ability to bring

Speaker 5: about his plans. Instead, he can use our very doubts

Speaker 5: to highlight his faithfulness, and in doing so, he can

Speaker 5: turn our disbelief into faith and our doubt into joy.

Speaker 5: If they would have easily been blessed with the child,

Speaker 5: they wouldn't have looked at at it as the miracle

Speaker 5: that Isaac became. It was by laughing in disbelief because

Speaker 5: God held back this child, and so long that God

Speaker 5: held back this child for so long that they were
00:20:13
Speaker 5: able that they were able to laugh in faith in
00:20:17
Speaker 5: recognizing what a miracle he really was. Now look at
00:20:22
Speaker 5: your lives, my friends. Where have you laughed in doubt?

Speaker 5: And then where has God turned your skepticism into joy?

Speaker 5: How often have we all laughed off God's promises? How
00:20:36
Speaker 5: often have we thought his plans are too good to
00:20:39
Speaker 5: be true? And so often right as we do, God says,

Speaker 5: go ahead, laugh, doubt, question, but don't lose faith. Just
00:20:49
Speaker 5: wait and watch what I can do. Faith is not
00:20:53
Speaker 5: the absence of doubt. It's that within the doubt we
00:20:57
Speaker 5: continue to trust God.

Speaker 5: Trust his promises even when they seem laughable. And that's

Speaker 5: really the challenge in life, isn't it? To trust in

Speaker 5: God's promises, no matter how improbable they may seem to

Speaker 5: believe that he can bring life out of barrenness, that
00:21:19
Speaker 5: he can bring in our lives joy out of sorrow,

Speaker 5: that fulfillment of our dreams and our deepest prayers indeed

Speaker 5: will come out of waiting. This story invites us to

Speaker 5: embrace the laughable nature of God's promises, to see that
00:21:39
Speaker 5: God delights in turning our laughter of doubt into a
00:21:42
Speaker 5: laughter of joy. It's a call to trust in a
00:21:45
Speaker 5: God who specializes in the impossible, that what makes you
00:21:51
Speaker 5: feel the most despair will also the other side of it,
00:21:58
Speaker 5: embedding you the deepest faith when it comes to fruition.

Speaker 5: And this is an important point to remember as we

Speaker 5: continue our journey through the Bible, through this tale of

Speaker 5: God's chosen people, as his miracles grow ever and ever

Speaker 5: more impossible, sometimes even laughable. We see in the scriptures

Speaker 5: a burning bush speaks, the sea splits in, two flood
00:22:30
Speaker 5: falls from the sky, the sun stands still. A man
00:22:36
Speaker 5: is swallowed by a fish, spat out three days later,
00:22:40
Speaker 5: and he is completely unharmed. Truly, it's all unbelievable, improbable,

Speaker 5: even laughable. But next time you find yourself laughing at
00:22:52
Speaker 5: the improbability of God's promises, remember Sarah, Remember Isaac and
00:23:00
Speaker 5: your laughter be transformed by our mighty and loving God,
00:23:04
Speaker 5: who turns impossibility into reality. Our God, who is faithful

Speaker 5: even when we doubt, especially when we doubt, will lay
00:23:16
Speaker 5: blessings on your life as well. To speak more on

Speaker 3: is good medicine. Oh that's awesome. But sometimes joy isn't

Speaker 3: connected to euphoria or because you're so excited and delighted

Speaker 3: about a situation. Some times you're exasperated. You've gone as

Speaker 3: far as you can go, and emotionally you're just spent,

Speaker 3: and so when you're flesh erupts in this laughter, it's

Speaker 3: not the same kind of laughter. Got a feeling, that's

Speaker 3: what was happening you'll remember in Sarah's life. But then

Speaker 3: she comes to this moment with her husband Abraham. They

Speaker 3: They're trying to minimize your intimacy with God. Happens to us,
