In this episode of the "Lead to Serve" podcast, Pastor Ed Taylor and guest Pastor Bob Claycamp discuss the theme of "waiting on the Lord." They explore how waiting, though challenging, can be a period of significant spiritual growth and renewal. Pastor Ed emphasizes that waiting is not inherently negative but a divine pause that can lead to deeper trust in God. They discuss the importance of patience, using the story of Abraham and Sarah to illustrate the pitfalls of impatience. The episode encourages listeners to embrace waiting as a time for personal growth and deeper connection with God.

been so good so far. So thank you very much.
00:01:21
And I'm joined in studio once again with Pastor Bob Klaykamp.
00:01:26
Welcome, Bob. Yeah, it's good.
00:01:28
Great. Let's do this.

00:01:38
We're going to jump right into it.
00:01:39
When the Lord has you waiting, When the Lord has you waiting.
00:01:44
Waiting is not easy. Recently I just taught a Bible
00:01:50
study on the topic When God says no.
00:01:54
And one of the ways that God says no is no, not now and not
00:02:00
now means you're waiting. And I would say this no now
00:02:05
doesn't mean not not forever, but it does mean no now, which
00:02:09
is in a position of waiting on the Lord.
00:02:13
Let me say at the outset, because it could be easy to take
00:02:18
this topic and go negative and difficulty right away, 'cause it
00:02:22
is a difficult topic, but it's it's not waiting is not just
00:02:27
bad. Waiting is good.
00:02:31
It's a it's a good thing to do. And there are promises attached
00:02:35
to waiting. One of the most famous promises
00:02:38
is found in Isaiah, Isaiah chapter 40, verse 31.
00:02:45
So right away, I don't want to start, although we will be
00:02:48
talking with some of the difficult aspects of waiting for
00:02:51
sure. But it's not only difficult.
00:02:54
It's not only difficult because the Bible says in Isaiah 4031,
00:02:58
those who wait on the Lord notice the benefits.
00:03:02
Number one shall renew their strength #2 shall mount up with
00:03:07
wings like eagles, which speaks to me of freedom of expression.
00:03:12
Just just flying in the wind. They shall run and not be weary
00:03:18
because the exact opposite kind of feels that way when you're
00:03:20
waiting. I don't want to do anything, but
00:03:22
God's going to give you the strength and then they shall
00:03:24
walk and not faint. So let's be, let's be clear here
00:03:29
that waiting is not negative, even though it can be painful.
00:03:37
And when you're in a place of waiting, it's very important
00:03:41
that you remain in that place without messing things up.
00:03:45
Yeah, that's tricky. Abraham and Sarah is one of the
00:03:49
examples that I think of when they were given a promise, but
00:03:53
not a time frame. And it was the promise was
00:03:57
great, but it was impossible. You're going to have a child in
00:04:00
your old age. You can't bear children, neither
00:04:02
one of you. You're so old.
00:04:03
Can't have kids. OK, physically impossible.
00:04:06
All of it is impossible, which was God's will.
00:04:09
But they weren't given the timing.
00:04:12
And because they weren't given the timing, they became
00:04:15
impatient and create a little. Ishmael.
00:04:18
Yeah. And Abraham, Really.
00:04:21
I mean, Sarah came up with the idea, but Abraham didn't pray
00:04:24
about it. He was the leader, Yeah.
00:04:27
He. Sounds good to me.
00:04:30
That's what we do around here. And so when you think of
00:04:34
waiting, I gave a little introduction.
00:04:36
But when you think of waiting, what are your thoughts?
00:04:38
Timing the Lord's timing and again, going back to an earlier
00:04:46
podcast about fear of missed opportunities.
00:04:50
Yes, yes, sometimes we are so sure that this is the right time
00:04:56
and then something happens and immediately we go, Wallace, the
00:05:02
devil stopping it. Oh, wait a second.
00:05:05
Maybe, just maybe the Lord's given you a detour because it's
00:05:10
not, I mean, you know, I just developed a whole study on
00:05:15
detours are not roadblocks. And so many times in Scripture
00:05:20
there are detours or diversions as they say in the UK.
00:05:24
But, but there's, there's a purpose for the diversion.
00:05:28
There's a purpose for the detour.
00:05:29
It's not to stop your way like a roadblock.
00:05:33
It's to help you get to your destination safely because maybe
00:05:38
the bridge is out and you can't see it, but they don't give you
00:05:40
the explanation when they show the sign.
00:05:43
That's good. And so waiting on the Lord is
00:05:47
like, Lord, there's a real desire in my heart to see this
00:05:50
accomplished or see this happen, but I'm going to let you put it
00:05:56
together your way if it's of you.
00:05:58
And that's like, not my will, but thine be done.
00:06:02
And yet there's a part of us that sometimes we sneak into
00:06:05
wanting to have our ministry validated and so then the Lord's
00:06:11
not allowing it and so immediately become like one man.
00:06:15
Maybe I'm not even just called because nothing's happening.
00:06:18
I mean, going over to the UK for the first time, talking with
00:06:22
missionaries, one guy comes to me and says, tell me what I'm
00:06:26
doing wrong. I've been here 15 years and I'm
00:06:29
back to doing everything myself. People that I've tried to invest
00:06:33
in have moved away. You know, what am I doing wrong?
00:06:36
Shouldn't it look different after 15 years?
00:06:40
And so my part was just, well, let's let's let's go back to the
00:06:46
beginning. Did you really feel God was
00:06:50
calling you here to serve in this down in Scotland?
00:06:55
And he goes, well, I know that. OK, so how long did it take
00:07:00
before anybody showed up? And he goes, well, it was, it
00:07:05
was a while, but what was it like when all of a sudden they
00:07:08
showed up because they heard about your church or your Bible
00:07:12
study or you have a sought on the website or whatever else.
00:07:15
Sometimes we can create websites, make us look like we
00:07:18
got something going. Not good.
00:07:21
And and and so it's just perspective.
00:07:25
Just saying, listen, as a, as a pastor, you're like a foster
00:07:30
parent. These people aren't your people,
00:07:33
they're his people and he wants you to take care of them for a
00:07:37
season. Sometimes the season is short,
00:07:39
sometimes it's long, but you're just to be faithful for what God
00:07:44
has called you to do. And if they leave, then you can
00:07:49
just say, OK, my responsibility is, is completed here with them
00:07:54
under my cover. And there's and sometimes when
00:08:00
you're in a a work for a long period of time, you will have
00:08:03
seasons where you you doubt your calling because in your mind you
00:08:12
expected things to look different after so long a time.
00:08:16
You're really looking. You said something that sparked
00:08:19
a thought. When you have someone coming and
00:08:22
they've been waiting for whatever their expectation of
00:08:25
the Lord was, and that statement, you know, when is it
00:08:29
going to happen? And in order to say that, you
00:08:32
got to look over the 50 precious people that are sitting in front
00:08:35
of you. And you say, well, what do you
00:08:36
mean? What is going to happen exactly?
00:08:39
God's entrusted to you 50 people.
00:08:42
What, what, what are we talking about here?
00:08:45
And you may not be in a position of spiritually waiting.
00:08:48
You may be in a position of fleshly being discontented and
00:08:53
there is a fine balance when we think of ministry and people,
00:08:56
but it's that measurement of that.
00:08:59
There is certainly like a fruit. We can see fruit.
00:09:03
Obviously if one piece of fruit is there and no piece of fruit,
00:09:06
then it's so that's a fruitful tree compared to the one has
00:09:09
nothing. So it's not like numbers don't
00:09:11
matter. They do say something, but they
00:09:13
don't always say what we conclude and when is it going to
00:09:17
happen at what it is happening on.
00:09:19
And if we tie together our discussions in this season, it.
00:09:23
It's interesting how I'm waiting for people.
00:09:27
I'm waiting for the right people so they can serve in the church.
00:09:29
And we will wait a minute. We just taught you, or we talked
00:09:32
about it at least, how to use the people that you have right
00:09:37
and at least try, at least step in, not even try, but step into
00:09:40
their lives and pastor them and shepherd them that this need of
00:09:44
servants may not even be what you think it is.
00:09:47
It was God's way. He was just waiting for you to
00:09:50
start pastoring them. Yeah, he could.
00:09:53
He can move on hearts and he doesn't need us.
00:09:55
He could move on hearts. People could show up and say,
00:09:59
I've been waiting forever for all these servants.
00:10:01
Who are all the servants? Well, they've been there a long
00:10:03
way. God's just been waiting for you
00:10:04
to pastor. Them.
00:10:05
Yeah, that's right. I mean the first in a time of
00:10:09
waiting. The first work it seems the Lord
00:10:11
wants to do is inside you. Always.
00:10:14
And it, it brings up all kinds of things.
00:10:18
It's a, it's a purging. It's a clarification, it's a
00:10:24
humbling. It is the perspective of who am
00:10:29
I serving here? Am I serving myself or am I
00:10:32
serving the Lord and, and and think about it and I've used
00:10:36
this illustration with them. I'm going, listen, if the Lord
00:10:40
Jesus came to you in a dream and said to you, I have 6 sheep over
00:10:47
here that I love dearly and they need to be fed and cared for,
00:10:53
would you do that for me? Would you go over there and do
00:10:57
that for me? I'd really, really appreciate it
00:11:00
because I love them. And.
00:11:02
And I think you're ready to do that.
00:11:06
And then you'd go, yeah, I'll do, I'll do whatever you want.
00:11:09
You know, look what you've done for me.
00:11:10
I'll do whatever you want. So you get over there and here's
00:11:13
the six sheep, boy, I didn't tell you that They're ornery and
00:11:16
they kick and they bite. And it's like, what kind of
00:11:20
sheep are these? And how come he gets like, you
00:11:22
know, flock and he's got sheep dogs to help out and I've got
00:11:26
nothing. I've got these.
00:11:27
Yeah. I mean, all of a sudden you've
00:11:28
got these names and, and your attitude and.
00:11:32
OK, well, there's another reason he had you go over there, and
00:11:37
that's to purge your heart and to get that junk out of you so
00:11:41
that you can be the right kind of ambassador of him.
00:11:47
Not just a shepherd, but an ambassador goes with the
00:11:52
authority and the like mindedness, like we talked about
00:11:56
earlier, of the country that he's representing.
00:12:00
And if he goes off on his own and goes off on somebody else,
00:12:04
that's not the heart of the leader, the king or the
00:12:08
president, then he'll get fired. We keep seeing this theme come
00:12:12
up with that expectations like whether they're spoken or not,
00:12:15
they're there. And we start out that
00:12:18
illustration you use that we start out with, I'll do whatever
00:12:20
you want. I'll do whatever you want.
00:12:22
That's like, if you don't give me 6, I'll find someone to
00:12:25
serve. I will.
00:12:26
You don't need to tell me to take out the trash.
00:12:28
I'm I've just taken upon my heart.
00:12:29
Am I even going to tell anybody? But you will never see a full
00:12:32
trash bag here because I just want to do that for you.
00:12:34
Start out that way. But then when somebody tells you
00:12:37
to take out the trash, Oh, no, no, no, no, no, Nobody tells me
00:12:41
what to do around here. Like I've got this.
00:12:43
It's my schedule. This is and it changes from I'll
00:12:46
do anything, go anywhere. I will pay any price to serve
00:12:50
you Lord to we use the same language, but then we add to it
00:12:54
and we go, well, I'll do all that if and then you can
00:12:58
whatever the if is that shows up along the way along that that
00:13:04
illustration. An if would be, you know, I'd
00:13:07
love to serve 6 sheep if they're nice, kind, clean, whatever.
00:13:11
Well, yeah. And, and what comes to mind also
00:13:14
is seasons of waiting when you're single because I've had a
00:13:22
lot of both men and women come to me and saying I don't
00:13:26
understand. I really, really, really, really
00:13:29
want to get married, but it's just not working out.
00:13:33
And how long? What am I doing wrong that I
00:13:38
can't find the right soulmate and all, the, all the rest of
00:13:42
it? And, and my, my counsel, my
00:13:46
first go to council is, first of all, God is your first soul
00:13:49
mate. He's the one that can fill your
00:13:52
heart and fill that emptiness in you that no other person can
00:13:58
fill. Because if you're looking for
00:14:00
them to fill it, they're not going to be able to fill it.
00:14:02
And you're going to be disappointed and you're going
00:14:05
to, plus you're also going to be in a marriage that's not going
00:14:07
to be fun. You know, in the meantime, God
00:14:12
wants to work in you to prepare you.
00:14:15
And maybe, just maybe there's somebody else, your future
00:14:19
spouse that's praying for God to work on the heart of their
00:14:22
future spouse. And you're just happened to be
00:14:25
it. And the work's not done yet.
00:14:27
And so you've got to take who you are in the period of waiting
00:14:32
and say, I am going to be as close to Jesus as I can be and
00:14:38
just love Him, be content in Him and let him work out the desires
00:14:43
of my heart. Yes, seasons are is a great way
00:14:46
of looking at waiting because there are different seasons,
00:14:49
seasons of activity, seasons. Moving to Colorado really helped
00:14:54
me growing up and out in California you have two seasons,
00:14:57
sunny and beautiful and rainy. I mean, that's pretty much that
00:15:02
was the seasons and always smog. But when the calls were out, you
00:15:06
didn't see the smog. So that was it when I moved to
00:15:09
Colorado. 4 very distinct seasons.
00:15:12
They're very clear and they come and go.
00:15:15
You know, when 1 is changing, you actually celebrate most of
00:15:19
the seasons, except when it turns winter.
00:15:23
But you celebrate when it changes back.
00:15:25
And we're noticing it now. The weather's changing, you can
00:15:27
feel it. The days are beautiful.
00:15:29
It's warmer and there are seasons and there's a distinct
00:15:32
beginning and a distinct end. And I, I believe if we embrace
00:15:37
life like seasons or ministry life like seasons or single life
00:15:42
like seasons, then we will be more malleable in and more
00:15:48
shaped, being able to be shaped by the Lord as we just trust him
00:15:52
to embrace the season. And you know, with winter, I, I,
00:15:56
I don't like it. I don't like the snow, but I
00:15:58
have really been making an effort personally to stop bad
00:16:02
mouthing the season weather. I'm winter.
00:16:05
I've really in my mind, I'm getting better at it.
00:16:08
I'm not 100%, but I'm getting there where I'm learning to
00:16:12
appreciate everything that happens in winter I and that it
00:16:16
means I have to adjust my life. It means I have to shovel.
00:16:18
It means that I see real I it's a different season, but God
00:16:23
spoke to me a couple years ago where and and you know, it's AI
00:16:27
don't know if I'm going to get there.
00:16:30
In his life. I hope I do, but like I I so do
00:16:34
not like cold, snow and ice even here.
00:16:38
See, I'm talking to you about I was like, but I'm making better
00:16:42
progress and and yet I'm also appreciating the snowpack, the
00:16:46
the, the water, the I guess there's some purpose in God's
00:16:50
will for winter and and even if I don't agree.
00:16:54
Let's go deeper. Yeah, well, OK.
00:16:56
OK. And bears go to sleep, I guess.
00:16:59
And the leaves fall off and. Snakes run away.
00:17:04
Yeah, but. But I think in life, on more
00:17:08
serious matters, we certainly go through seasons and, you know,
00:17:11
you want to embrace it. It's hard, yes, but it's also
00:17:15
God's working. God's working in that season.
00:17:18
He's strengthening you, helping you.
00:17:20
And ultimately, everything that's happening is intended to
00:17:24
draw us to Him. Yeah, he created seasons.
00:17:27
Yes, Purpose. Yes, he did and he uses them
00:17:32
greatly in our lives and faithfulness to the Lord and to
00:17:36
his calling is something that doesn't change.
00:17:41
It's faithful in every season. It's what we revert back to.
00:17:45
We remember Our Calling, we remember God's word and we
00:17:48
remember if we take Abram and Sarah as we wind up this
00:17:52
episode, we go back there. They did not lean on the
00:17:57
promise. The promise wasn't just that
00:18:00
they they would receive Isaac, the promises that God would give
00:18:05
them Isaac. So over time, you even begin to
00:18:09
remember the promises of God differently than how they were
00:18:13
given to you. Sure, we're reading the Bible
00:18:16
and praying every day anchors us into the truth so that we're
00:18:20
receiving the word the way it is.
00:18:22
Because when you're waiting, you start again.
00:18:24
You, you, you begin. I begin to rewrite the narrative
00:18:28
in my mind trying to get out of this season.
00:18:30
I want to get out. I don't like it.
00:18:33
I mean, we're talking. I've got stuff going on in my
00:18:36
life that I'd love to get out of 13 years now.
00:18:39
I would love to get out of it. I have to trust the Lord.
00:18:43
I got to keep giving it back to him like.
00:18:45
Yeah. Whether I love I don't think he
00:18:47
looks down on me for wanting to get out of it, but the reality
00:18:51
is I'll suffer great consequences if I try.
00:18:54
Sure. Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:18:55
And it and it it's in, in that season, there are levels.
00:18:59
That's good. When the Lord gives you that
00:19:01
promise, he knows there's going to be levels of submission and
00:19:05
surrender to that promise. And as life goes on, it refines
00:19:11
you. It yeah, just refines you.
00:19:16
That's that's the word that comes to me is that David was so
00:19:20
much different after 1012 years when he went through all of that
00:19:26
being chased by Saul and all of his special forces, you know, to
00:19:31
try to get him David. It drove ambition out of his
00:19:35
heart, which needed to happen, but it had to happen through a
00:19:39
season of waiting, even though he had the right, but he didn't
00:19:44
have the right. And so he had to submit to the
00:19:48
Lord in the waiting and God was doing the right work.
00:19:52
And then, I mean, he almost blew it with trying to go after
00:19:57
Nabel. I mean, he and then Abigail, God
00:20:01
used Abigail to, you know, help him.
00:20:03
Speak truth. Chill out and slow down.
00:20:08
But yeah, anyway. No, it's good anyway.
00:20:11
Keep going. Anyway, keep it, keep it going.
00:20:13
Bob, we love to hear your wisdom, but seasons of waiting.
00:20:18
Yeah, just in the waiting. He made some bad choices to go
00:20:23
to the Philistines and he was just that close.
00:20:28
It was just a a short time before Saul would die, but he
00:20:36
got tired of being chased and he got his eyes on the
00:20:40
inconvenience and the hassle and got him, got his eyes off of how
00:20:45
God delivered him each time. And not just them, but the 600
00:20:49
men are with him because now he's responsible.
00:20:51
How do you hide with 600 guys? I mean, what kind of cave are
00:20:55
you going to be in, you know? What is it?
00:20:57
Not that big, Peter. Yeah.
00:21:00
I'm coming up to you after service.
00:21:02
You just taught a Bible study, and I'm in a season of waiting,
00:21:06
and I give you my story. Bob, what are the two top pieces
00:21:09
of counsel you give me? Number one, God is working #2 it
00:21:16
starts on the inside. And I would add, so I would give
00:21:19
my two, I would say, so you don't like it and let them talk
00:21:26
and see what it is that stirred them to come talk about the
00:21:30
season of waiting and, and I would see if I can respond And,
00:21:34
and then I my second piece of advice would be you need to
00:21:37
continue waiting until God fulfills his promise.
00:21:41
Very, very important. Don't take things into your own
00:21:44
hands. When I was teaching through
00:21:46
First Samuel, that phrase kept coming up over and over again.
00:21:51
Don't take things into your own hands, primarily because I
00:21:55
understand I on in different ways how much damage you can do
00:22:02
when you take things into your own hands, which I've done.
00:22:06
I mean, it's first hand experience.
00:22:08
It's not theory or theological commentary.
00:22:13
It's my, it's, it's seasons of my life where I've taken things,
00:22:17
I mean my whole life, apart from Christ, of course, was you want
00:22:20
to run, you want to live your own life, go ahead.
00:22:23
It's all in your hands there, buddy.
00:22:24
Tell me how it goes. Fight me, rebel against me and
00:22:28
drink yourself into oblivion. I mean, it's not my will for
00:22:31
you. Kind of like the prodigal
00:22:32
father, prodigal son, where he's the father of the prodigal son.
00:22:37
If that's what you want, son, but it's not what's best for
00:22:40
you. And I always be here.
00:22:43
I got to go back. I got to go back to the farm.
00:22:45
I'll be I'll always be here. You know the address, but it's
00:22:49
not what my best. And these seasons of waiting,
00:22:52
they're hard, but stay steady, stay faithful, continuing the
00:22:56
word and prayer and know that while you're in a season of
00:23:01
waiting in one area doesn't mean you're in a seat, doesn't mean
00:23:04
you're completely stopped. There are other things to do for
00:23:08
the Kingdom. You don't have to be stuck.
00:23:11
And I'm not getting this over here, so I can't do anything
00:23:13
else. There's a lot you can do while
00:23:15
you're waiting. Yeah.
00:23:17
For the Kingdom. You can pay attention to other
00:23:20
areas. And I would also add, if I'm
00:23:23
thinking of advice and counsel, like you said, pay attention to
00:23:28
what God is revealing and deal with it like you.
00:23:32
I didn't. You didn't know you were so
00:23:33
impatient, did you? And so now you're OK.
00:23:36
This is an area of my life where I'm not depending on the
00:23:38
resources of Christ. I'm not abiding because if I was
00:23:41
abiding He would give me long-suffering.
00:23:43
I'd enjoy it. Well, any final thoughts?
00:23:47
Waiting is health food. What do you mean by that?
00:23:52
Well, it it is. It cures you.
00:23:55
It seasons you. It's good.
00:23:58
It repairs you impetuousness. The devil uses that so much.
00:24:06
Yeah. And sometimes, especially in a
00:24:09
long season of waiting, we we lose perspective and we have to
00:24:14
understand that service is secondary, relationship with him
00:24:19
is first. Period.
00:24:21
I mean, it's it. And so sometimes we get the cart
00:24:23
before the horse and we interpret relationship with what
00:24:28
we do instead of who we are. And that may require a long
00:24:34
season of just. Getting that right reorienting.
00:24:38
And it's amazing how many times I hear when people say I finally
00:24:43
just let it go and it was just me and Jesus.
00:24:46
Then all of a sudden, things change.
00:24:49
Yes, I've, I've heard that. I've seen that in my own life.
00:24:53
It's a wrestling with God that I'm not going to win.
00:24:56
It's a wrestling with God that isn't going to end well.
00:24:58
Until I surrender, I'm not going to win.
00:25:01
And the seasons of waiting, I have to say now, looking back
00:25:05
with a little bit of hindsight, have been very beneficial for
00:25:07
me. Not easy, but it made me a
00:25:10
better man. As I trust God, as I learn to
00:25:13
see things from his perspective. And whether that be church,
00:25:16
whether it be my marriage, whether it be my friendships,
00:25:19
whether it be my family, God knows what he's doing with my
00:25:22
life. He does not need me at any time
00:25:24
to take the reins again. Yeah.
00:25:27
And neither do I need to do that.
00:25:28
Drive the cart off the Cliff, yeah.
00:25:30
I don't need that. I need to continue following
00:25:33
him, abiding in him, enjoying him.
00:25:36
All right, well, that comes to another end now to an episode of
00:25:41
lead to serve. Appreciate you guys sticking
00:25:44

Taylor dot org, it has to be.org becausethe.com Santa Claus owns
00:26:08
and he doesn't forward my e-mail anymore.
00:26:11
Literally, I'm no joke. He used to forward it.
00:26:13
Now he doesn't anymore. I did check, by the way.
00:26:16
I mean, it's not. I did check.
00:26:18
I have a little program. You can check the website
00:26:20
traffic. We get way more traffic than
00:26:22
Santa Claus does on his website. I did check it and we did try to
00:26:26
get that domain, but at any rate, just a little light
00:26:30
heartedness at the end. At taylor.org is my website,
00:26:33
Pastor Bob in his ministry called Missions assist.
00:26:38
He can be reached Bob klaycamp.com
00:26:41
bobklaycampexactlyhowitsounds.com. And if you have any questions or
00:26:47
you have a heart for UK and and beyond.
00:26:50
But right now it seems like UK is one of those places that Bob
00:26:53
and Jeannie are going to be focusing on in this brand new
00:26:56
ministry adventure and that's what it is.
00:26:58
