00:00:07
This is Lee to serve with Ed Taylor, a leadership podcast,

00:00:11
welcome to today's edition of the lead to serve podcast.

00:00:16
This is where we talk about life and Ministry learning to be

00:00:20
better equipped so we can serve Jesus in these last days.

00:00:24
Even as I was looking over my own life, I just see more years

00:00:28
behind me than I see. E ahead of me and I want to go

00:00:31
out strong and I think you do too.

00:00:33
And the best way to do that is to turn to the word and grow

00:00:36
together in understanding, what it means to serve Jesus.

00:00:40
Well, he came as a servant and I love Mark 10:45 where Jesus says

00:00:47
that the son of man, he came to serve and not be served to give

00:00:52
his life a ransom for many. And I know that the greater we

00:00:57
learn how to serve the greater will be able to leave And that's

00:01:00
what this podcast is all about. Now, of course, we haven't had

00:01:03
an episode since March, and really the end of our season 2

00:01:09
was so long ago. And that's going to be part of

00:01:13
today's episode where we talked about being overwhelmed.

00:01:17
But I also want to introduce to you and let you know that we're

00:01:20
going to begin again regularly with this podcast covering the

00:01:24
topics in a new resource. We developed here a book that we

00:01:28
put together That we titled sure and steady learning and growing

00:01:34
in pastoral Ministry but we're going to use it also in

00:01:37
application to any type of ministry and we're going to flip

00:01:41
through the pages and work through just like I would with

00:01:45
the team here and that's really what I what I view the podcast

00:01:49
as is I'm working with the team here and we're collaborating and

00:01:52
talking through Ministry talking about important topics.

00:01:56
That's what the podcast is. So I really think in my mind

00:01:59
that your Across from me that we get the chance to sit together

00:02:04
and talk through Ministry together.

00:02:05
So my name is Ed Taylor. I'm the pastor at Calvary Church

00:02:09

00:02:20
Lord used his holy spirit in my life to draw us out to Colorado,

00:02:25
and here we are. And so I want to let you know,

00:02:28
sure, and steady the Next season of the lead to serve podcast.

00:02:37
the word out. Please leave a, you know, a

00:02:40

00:02:48
be great. But just share it around.

00:02:50
Email me, go to my website, Ed, Taylor, dot-org, Ed Taylor Dot,

00:02:56

00:02:59

00:03:01
That man is a professional Santa Claus and he is like over the

00:03:07
world wide Santa Claus Network. That's not me.

00:03:11
I am at Ed Taylor dot-org where I write frequently and to share

00:03:16
things that are on my heart. So get it, get ready and

00:03:19
subscribe, re-subscribe. Whatever it is that you need to

00:03:22
do as we go through, sure and steady together and learn

00:03:26
principles, you know, sure and steady things like it's

00:03:29
important. To develop your personal walk

00:03:31
with the Lord. What is the heart of a pastor

00:03:33
coming off side and serving your pastor serving people?

00:03:37
You know, like that. What does it look like to serve

00:03:40
people? How to use your time?

00:03:42
Well, it's so important to have that personal structure or

00:03:46
inviting yourself into the lives of others.

00:03:49
This resource was developed through the personal

00:03:52
discipleship of our church here. And then, as a team of pastors,

00:03:55
we collaborated and edited it down to this book form and you

00:03:59
can get at anywhere. It on Amazon you can get it on

00:04:01
our church store at Calvary Co dot store in.

00:04:05
It's a great resource. It's something that we use

00:04:08
regularly and I know the Lord will use it in your life.

00:04:10
But for today, I want to briefly talk to you about being

00:04:14
overwhelmed. Are you overwhelmed?

00:04:17
I think the last couple years with covid racial tensions, the

00:04:25
difficulties of the political polarization which is has led to

00:04:30
such deep division in the church has created this sense of being

00:04:35
overwhelmed as you got all of those heavy things, right?

00:04:39
And then on top of that, you have everyday life, you go to

00:04:42
work. You've now you're working at

00:04:44
home and your kids school, shut down.

00:04:46
Then you got the kids at home, you.

00:04:48
You're single wondering what the what in the world's going on?

00:04:51
You have car troubles and build troubles and you name it and

00:04:55
being overwhelmed. Is a constant continual

00:05:00
Temptation, you know, to just jump in and do everything and be

00:05:04
overwhelmed, and it's also a constant continual reality and

00:05:09
it's okay. If you're overwhelmed.

00:05:11
I mean, it's not okay to stay there, but like, if you have

00:05:14
been feeling overwhelmed and all, you know, just feeling all

00:05:16
condemned about it, don't it's a normal response to all the

00:05:21
things that we've endured. Just even in the last couple

00:05:23
years that, you know, I looked up the definition of On the

00:05:28
type, the words, like buried. You know, you think of a buried

00:05:32
beneath everything, buried beneath all the pressure, buried

00:05:36
beneath all the work, all the paperwork, all the projects,

00:05:39
another definition was used drowned beneath a huge mass so

00:05:45
words like buried and drowned aren't very encouraging.

00:05:49
Also, another definition for overwhelm.

00:05:52
This to feel defeated completely defeated Completely, and I just

00:05:59
know that pastors leaders servants men and women that are

00:06:04
wanting to serve Jesus, wholeheartedly have felt

00:06:07
overwhelmed. It's easy to feel overwhelmed.

00:06:10
I think of a Biblical example of a man that felt overwhelmed and

00:06:16
That Was Elijah. Elijah.

00:06:19
You look at his life and how God used him up on Mount Carmel, and

00:06:24
that was spiritually and physically.

00:06:27
Thing for him even though we see the Victory and we, we are

00:06:33
encouraged by the victory. That Elijah had he was

00:06:37
encouraged by it, but when his life was threatened, he had this

00:06:41
overwhelming sense of I can't go on.

00:06:43
I can't continue to do this. He runs away hides in a cave and

00:06:48
the Lord met him there. And I want to just give a few

00:06:51
things against speaking to this sense of being overwhelmed.

00:06:55
I want to talk about a few things because They're fresh on

00:06:57
my mind. I just returned back from a

00:07:01
glorious time serving churches in Florida.

00:07:04
I was in Vero Beach or Pastor Jim Gallagher and Christy and it

00:07:08
was such an amazing time. And then I drove up with my wife

00:07:12
to Jacksonville, Florida serving it, reached Church there with

00:07:15
Pastor Eric Souza and his wife Betsy and his kiddos Isabel

00:07:20
Lily. And Dane, we had such a

00:07:21
wonderful time there and And we had some time with their

00:07:26
leadership. And this question was asked,

00:07:28
which I think is what why this is fresh on my mind when it

00:07:31
comes to this podcast. Because this question was, was

00:07:35
asked, it was a very legitimate, a good question.

00:07:38
I think it's on the hearts and minds of many people and that is

00:07:41
how do I find balance? How do I find balance?

00:07:46
I'm working full-time. I'm serving in the capacity of a

00:07:50
growing Ministry. Full time.

00:07:52
I have Responsibilities as a husband, I have responsibilities

00:07:57
as a dad, or for some of you have responsibilities as a wife,

00:08:00
as a mom, what and how. And, where is balanced now?

00:08:07
My answer might surprise you and you may not even agree with me,

00:08:13
but I am grateful that you would consider seeing my point of view

00:08:17
on balance and here it is. You ready?

00:08:18
It's it might be a little shocking because this is such a

00:08:21
popular topic. Today.

00:08:24
And here's my answer. I don't believe there's such a

00:08:28
thing as balance When it comes to serving the lord, and what I

00:08:33
mean by that is that there's always some cost involved in

00:08:40
serving, Jesus, Jesus even himself teaching us taught us

00:08:45
about counting the cost. So if there's a cost involved in

00:08:50
serving the lord, then we need to consider that cost and

00:08:55
realized that that will never be that time will never be returned

00:09:00
to. Me and I believe if I'm doing

00:09:03
one thing I can't do. Another thing at the same time

00:09:07
which also leads to another shocking thought that I have and

00:09:12
that is I'm not a believer in multitasking.

00:09:15
As a matter of fact, I would go even so far to say that.

00:09:19
I don't believe people can multitask effectively.

00:09:23
I know when you're asking for a job and you're in the interview

00:09:26
process I can multitask and that's a valued.

00:09:29
That's something that's It's valued in our culture today but

00:09:32
I don't think that we can effectively multitask we can do

00:09:36
one thing. Well, at a time and we might be

00:09:39
able again to just to clarify. We might be able to do two or

00:09:43
three things at the same time. I'm not, I'm not saying you

00:09:46
can't do that, but what I am suggesting is that when we try

00:09:50
in the service of Our Lord to do through two or three things at

00:09:55
the same time, we're not going to do them.

00:09:57
Well, we can do one thing at a time.

00:10:01
And we want to do what's in front of us and we want to do it

00:10:05
well and because of some of the principles that have just

00:10:09
overtaken us you know multitasking and balance.

00:10:13
What I believe we've done is we've added another burden Upon

00:10:16
Our shoulders that we just can't shake because we'll never find

00:10:19
balance. I mean think about it, could you

00:10:21
ask yourself the question in your own life?

00:10:23
Have you effectively found balance?

00:10:26
And I would say that if you even possibly answered, yes to that

00:10:31
then I would say well what don't you want more time with your

00:10:34
family? Yeah I love more time with my

00:10:35
family. Wouldn't you like to serve the

00:10:37
Lord more and maybe teach more or or Council more and you go.

00:10:42
Of course, I'd like more and just in that thought of more,

00:10:45
you realize there's always more and if I counseled, and I'm not

00:10:51
going to get the time of my family.

00:10:52
If I get the time my family, I'm not going to be able to sit down

00:10:55
in that counseling. So I can only do one thing at a

00:10:57
time, I want to do things well and I realized that if I'm doing

00:11:02
something something else is going to suffer and that sense

00:11:08
of balance is like man. I can never fight so

00:11:10
frustrating. I just want to acknowledge the

00:11:13
frustration, you're feeling right?

00:11:14
It is so frustrating because something's always pulling out

00:11:18
us, something is always tugging at us and, you know, Jesus, I

00:11:23
have learned this, I haven't always practice it.

00:11:25
Let me tell you. I haven't always practiced it

00:11:28
but I am learning it more and more and I want to go through a

00:11:31
few things, just a few things. I jotted down that I think are

00:11:36
important if you're feeling overwhelmed right now, if you

00:11:39
are, you know, looking at how can I be more effective?

00:11:44
How can I find balance if that's really a question in your, how

00:11:47
can I find balance and you're overwhelmed because you can't

00:11:51
let me list a few things. Number one, rest.

00:11:55
Number one, rest. In the rhythm of your life, make

00:12:00
sure that you are well rested. I think you should learn to be

00:12:06
well-rested physically and I also think you should be

00:12:10
well-rested emotionally and I also think you should be

00:12:14
well-rested spiritually and I think of John 15 in verse 1 as

00:12:24
Jesus is talking about being the True Vine.

00:12:28
He says, my father is the vinedresser every branch in me

00:12:32
that does not bear fruit. He takes away and every branch

00:12:36
that bears fruit, he prunes that he might bear more fruit.

00:12:41
You are already clean because of the word, which I have spoken to

00:12:45
you and then he says abide in me.

00:12:47
Isn't that beautiful abide in me?

00:12:50
And I in you as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself,

00:12:54
unless it abides in the vine. So neither can you unless you

00:13:01
abide in me? Simple stuff, isn't it?

00:13:04
But all of ministry and all of life comes from abiding.

00:13:08
As we're has, we take from and receive from all the power and

00:13:14
resources that we need from Christ and the pressure that we

00:13:20
we're feeling is something that is taking care of by the

00:13:24
vinedresser the father. As we abide in the true real

00:13:29
authentic Vine. We are well taken care of, you

00:13:34
know, the New Living Translation says, the father is the gardener

00:13:37
or in the message it says he's the farmer and suck.

00:13:41
My dad is the one that takes care of me.

00:13:43
My dad's, the one that tends me and cultivates me, but we're out

00:13:47
running around taking care of this rush rush rush think.

00:13:50
Think think multitask multitask? And we are not doing that from a

00:13:55
place of Abiding and because we're not doing that from a

00:13:57
place of abiding were overwhelmed.

00:14:00
We're overwhelmed. Even if you know, if we think of

00:14:04
this task oriented lie and you have 10 tasks, you will always

00:14:08
have Tim test. They will be done one at a time.

00:14:11
They'll be knocked off the list one at a time.

00:14:14
But wouldn't you rather face the ten tasks abiding in the vine

00:14:19
being taken care of, by the father, being led by the spirit

00:14:24
being empowered by the spirit being reminded of how good he

00:14:29
breast friend. Rest rest.

00:14:33
Rest in the Lord, let the pressure be taken off of you

00:14:37
today. Rest in the Lord, do what's in

00:14:40
front of you. Know that the Lord is the Our

00:14:43
father is with you. You know, Jesus, he says, right

00:14:47
here in John 15, that we can't do anything without him.

00:14:52
Who, although, we do a lot of things without him.

00:14:54
He says abide in me and I in you because the branch cannot bear

00:14:59
fruit of itself. There's a lot of activities and

00:15:05
a lot of things coming from our life, but true fruit comes from

00:15:11
the Lord. Just hearing it right now as I'm

00:15:15
talking it through is so encouraging to me knowing

00:15:18
everything that I face even today, you know, when I'm done

00:15:21
with this broadcast, I still got so many things to take care of

00:15:26
today and so do you. But I know I need to do it from

00:15:29
a place of rest and abiding. The fruit, you know, the things

00:15:34
that God wants to produce from your life anyway.

00:15:36
Remember it isn't something is not something you can ever

00:15:39
produce on your own and this is where frustrations come, this is

00:15:43
where being upset comes, this is where you feel buried in drowned

00:15:48
underneath the pressures. In the mass of all the heaviness

00:15:52
of life and situations is where you at the end of the day, you

00:15:56
might feel defeated completely, but even from a place of defeat

00:16:00
your in the Lord, your abiding, your You're resting in him, and

00:16:05
because of that, that rest, even in the feeling defeated, you

00:16:08
cast your cares upon the Lord and the frustrations can be

00:16:13
carried to him, you know? Because you you you want to

00:16:17
serve God. So you have this obligation

00:16:19
right? You feel like this obligation

00:16:20
but it's not an obligation. If you view it like an

00:16:23
obligation. Then you're like, oh, here are

00:16:25
my Works Lord. So I'm going to take care of

00:16:27
everything for you because everybody wants to and one of

00:16:30
the reasons I'm talking about this is that I've gotten a lot

00:16:32
of Email, a lot of people talking to me a lot of people

00:16:36
texting me. Ed, why aren't you doing your

00:16:38
podcast? Why haven't you done your

00:16:39
podcast? And my answer is I can't it

00:16:45
isn't something I can do right now.

00:16:47
I've got these decisions in this situation and and I can't, it's

00:16:51
it's actually suffered. I haven't been able to produce

00:16:54
it because of other things, taking priority.

00:16:58
And if I viewed the podcast as an obligation to God, then I'd

00:17:02
make it would be so So pressure-packed, I would be

00:17:05
overwhelmed but because I was able to set it aside which

00:17:09
brings me to number to prioritize rest and then,

00:17:15
secondly, prioritize and it is good to know that you're going

00:17:20
to take care of the things that need to be taken care of first.

00:17:24
And then to the priority list, you're just not going to be able

00:17:26
to get to everything right away and it's important that you

00:17:30
prioritize. Jesus was a master at Sizing and

00:17:35
the way that he described it, you know, we might talk about

00:17:37
priorities today but the way he described it as I always do

00:17:41
that, which pleases my father, and everybody wanted Jesus to do

00:17:46
this and that he would everybody had something for him to do but

00:17:50
he was focused with the right priorities, which brings us to

00:17:54
number three and that is focus. So rest prioritize Focus, if you

00:18:03
Except that you can only do one thing at a time.

00:18:06
Very well then, doesn't it make sense that you would want to

00:18:09
focus on that one thing in the level of priorities that the

00:18:13
Lord has given you right through prayer, that that abiding

00:18:16
relationship, spiritually involves prayer, involves your

00:18:19
own personal relationship, your own personal DeVos, your own

00:18:22
personal Bible reading, like not for others, but just for

00:18:24
yourself. So you're resting, you'll

00:18:27
prioritizing, and then you're focusing.

00:18:31
Remember what Paul said? He used this phrase in and it's

00:18:34
a great phrase. This one thing I do, which

00:18:39
circles back to this question of balance, right?

00:18:43
The Jesus said, and he taught us seek ye first, the kingdom of

00:18:49
God and his righteousness. And then, all these things will

00:18:53
be added unto you. Seek.

00:18:56
First, this one thing I do, As you make these conscious choices

00:19:03
of resting prioritizing focusing.

00:19:08
The final one I would add is resting and you go wait a

00:19:12
minute. I didn't you was on number one.

00:19:13
Yes and it is first and it is last and it's in the middle.

00:19:20
All of this activity comes from abiding. from resting, from

00:19:26
staying, put Even Paul the Apostle understood this in

00:19:32
Philippians 4:13. Remember he said, I can do all

00:19:36
things through Christ. That strengthens me, that that

00:19:42
important place. Of strength and drawing upon the

00:19:49
Lord strengths the word abide. Some of you already know this,

00:19:53
it's the Greek word meno, and it means to remain or to dwell, or

00:19:58
to stay put and it speaks of a closeness in a permanent

00:20:04
attachment. I like how the paraphrase in the

00:20:07
message. Translates John 1540, he says

00:20:12
live in me. Make your home in me just as I
