How do you prepare to preach when sermon preparation is not part of your weekly routine?
In this conversation, Mike Neglia speaks with his friend Noah Beumer, a pastor on staff at Calvary Boise in Idaho, where he currently oversees missions. Before moving into that role, Noah spent many years leading worship, and he now participates in Calvary Boise’s collaborative teaching team.
Noah reflects on the healthy fear and dependence that can accompany occasional preaching. He explains why preachers may sometimes need to pray more and study a little less—not because biblical study is unimportant, but because access to more information does not necessarily tell us what a particular congregation needs to hear.
Mike and Noah also discuss reading the biblical text before reaching for commentaries, finding the big idea of a passage, preparing as a verbal processor, using recording and transcription tools to organise a sermon, and moving from a full manuscript towards a more internalised message.
